THEIR FATHER’S DREAM

                                                                    PART 9

                                        MARY BOLTON & ROBBIE WOOTEN

Buck and Melissa had reached the village near noon. He’d kept a close watch on the sky. All his instincts told him that they were in for some bad weather, but he knew they would be fine once they reached the village. Red Bear would have plenty of food to share, and there would be many furs to keep them warm in their own private teepee. He smiled to himself. They might get snowed in after all!

Melissa had been watching the sky as they rode along. Those were snow clouds over their heads. Maybe it hadn’t been such a good idea to come to the village. As she opened her mouth to ask Buck, she realized she shouldn’t worry. After all, Red Bear’s village had with stood many winters. Besides, she was looking forward to her time alone with Buck. It had been too long since he’d held her in his arms. She shivered slightly in anticipation of the upcoming night. She knew it would be wonderful!

Red Bear met them on the outskirts of the village. The lookout had announced their arrival when they were still several miles away. A crowd gathered, as they slipped from their horses, to welcome them. Melissa knew most of them by name now and had picked up a lot of their language. It wasn’t that much different from that of the Cherokee. She remembered most if it from visiting with Grandmother Running Doe. Thus she had no trouble speaking to the women that she had made friends with. They crowded around her, giving her hugs and greetings of welcome. Buck watched with a smile on his face. Melissa fit in so well here. Red Bear’s voice brought his eyes from her.

“It is good to see you again my brother. You have gotten here before the winter storm is upon us. Come…warm yourselves by the fire in my lodge. Can you stay long?”

They followed Red Bear to his teepee where Autumn Wind and Morning Flower were cooking the noonday meal. They stood and hugged Melissa as she entered the teepee. She turned and answered Red Bear’s question once they were inside out of the cold.

“We can stay a few days Red Bear, if you don’t mind. It just depends on the weather.”

He smiled her way. “You are always welcome. It is good to see you again Gray Eyes. Sit down. Once you’ve warmed yourself and have eaten, I’ll take you to see Silver Wolf and her pups. You’ll be surprised at how much they have grown!”

Melissa smiled. She knew that Red Bear understood her want to see the pups. He would keep his promise to her.

They settled in to a cozy afternoon. Melissa helped Autumn Wind and Morning Flower serve and clean up after the meal. Then she watched them as they began to weave a blanket with beautiful designs. She learned that the blankets were made and taken to the white man’s trading posts to sell or trade for things that were needed in the village. It was fascinating to watch them work. It didn’t seem that hard and before long, Autumn Wind had Melissa by her side helping her weave.

Buck and Red Bear were sitting in a corner of the teepee away from the women talking. Red Bear watched Buck watching Gray Eyes. Apparently, they had come to the village to spend some time alone with one another. There was a hungry look in his brother’s eyes.

“Have you spoken to Gray Eyes yet of your intentions towards her, Runnin’ Buck?” He watched as his brother tore his eyes from her.

He knew that Red Bear cared about Melissa. That was why he was asking. “No, I plan to do that soon.”

Red Bear grinned in mischief. It was time to take some steps to get Running Buck to do the right thing. Though he knew that eventually he would on his own. He just needed a little push. “You should let the others in the village know of your intent. Several of the braves have asked about Gray Eyes. They see the two of you together, but you haven’t let your wishes be known. You should begin to court her while you are here!”

At the mention of the other braves, Buck had immediately become tense. He’d never thought of anyone at the village being interested in Melissa. But why not? Red Bear had made her a member of his family, and she was a very beautiful woman.

Red Bear watched the expressions go across Running Buck’s face. He knew that he was worried that someone in the village would challenge him for Gray Eyes. He wasn’t about to confess and tell him he’d made up the story! It was time to make his intentions known to Gray Eyes as well as the entire village. They were all awaiting a wedding celebration.

“Who has asked about my woman?” Buck looked across the teepee at Melissa. She was sitting with Autumn Wind and had such a look of concentration on her face as she listened to her explain how to do the weaving. He knew that she would be happy living in the village, but it wouldn’t be with anyone but him!

“It doesn’t matter. None of them stand a chance with her. I know where her heart lies. It is not with another brave here. Why do you not play the flute for her tonight? That is a sign of courtship in our village. It will let the others know she is spoken for.”

“But I ain’t got a flute, and there ain’t enough time to make one,” he looked troubled.

“You can use Red Bear’s!” He rose and went to find the musical instrument that he had made many years ago. It was kept in a very special place so that it would not get broken. He had played it courting both his wives.
Bringing it back, he placed it in Running Buck’s hands. “Do you remember how to play? You played once for Shinning Flower.”

Buck smiled as he remembered his childhood sweetheart. Red Bear was right. He had played the flute for her. They would have married if she hadn’t died of the fever.

“Yes, I remember. It was a long time ago that I played for her. We were only fifteen summers.”

“So much has changed since that time. Had death not claimed her, you would still be with us among the village.”

“But it wasn’t what the spirits wanted. Gray Eyes is the woman of my heart. She is the one who will be my mate.”

Red Bear smiled. It was good to know that Running Buck felt so strongly about it. Soon there would be the wedding celebration that the village awaited.

Melissa enjoyed learning to weave. She decided that she would like to make a blanket for Buck to use on his horse. Christmas was fast approaching. Hopefully there would be time to finish it. Autumn Wind assured her that she would help her with the design.

Several hours later, Red Bear came over and touched Melissa on the shoulder. “Come, it is time to go see Silver Wolf.” She quickly rose from the mat and followed him out of the teepee.

Buck walked along with them to the woods that surrounded the village. Silver Wolf ran out to greet Red Bear, but stopped at Buck’s appearance. He stood back, letting her know that he didn’t mean her any harm. She approached Melissa and quickly licked her outstretched hand. Then she moved over to Red Bear. He handed her a piece of meat that he had been saving her, and she graciously licked his hand. Taking it, she moved over to lie near the den.

Melissa approached the den and sat down near the entrance. Five heads popped out, curiously looking her way. Slowly they crawled out to her, and soon were playfully licking her hands, arms and climbing into her lap. Red Bear and Buck watched with amused expressions on their faces. She lovingly hugged each pup, replacing it on the ground. They rumbled around her, tugging on the ends of her skirt and long hair. She laughingly tumbled them to and fro. She was so like a child as she communed with them. Silver Wolf would glance their way occasionally, but wasn’t worried with Melissa’s attentions to her babies. She knew that she wouldn’t hurt them.

It wasn’t long before Melissa had picked out her favorite. Or perhaps he picked her. He was gray in color and had bright blue eyes. When the other pups had tired from their rough and tumble play, and had gone back into the den to nap, he had stuck with her, still playing. She picked him up and gave him a loving hug. The thought went through her head that he would make a wonderful pet, but she didn’t know how Sarah would feel about it. Maybe she would ask her later.

The afternoon was turning into evening when Melissa finally told the pups good-bye and replaced her pick into the den. She promised that she would come the next day if the weather permitted to visit. Turning, she walked back towards Red Bear and Buck who had been joined by several of the braves from the village. They had been talking of the many things that had gone on since their last visit.

Melissa felt something tugging on her skirt as she neared the men. Thinking that she had caught it on a root or briar, she turned to tug it loose. She was surprised to see her wolf pup pulling on the tail end of her skirt. Laughing she picked him up and carried him back to the den, his mother watching all the while from inside. She licked Melissa’s hand as she replaced him inside. With another pat, she once again started back towards Buck. The men watched in amusement.

Before she had taken many steps their way, there was a tugging on her skirt once again. Turning, there was the little fellow, pulling as hard as he could on her skirt. Leaning down she picked him up and carried him back. But in only seconds, he was pulling on her skirt again. He thought this was a game!

“No, you can’t go with me. You need to stay with you mother!” She replaced him again, but it was no use. He followed her back to the men!

“It looks as if you’ve made a friend.” Red Bear smiled her way.

“How can I get him to stay with his family? I don’t want him to try and follow us and get lost!”

“Do not worry. His mother will care for him. Come, it is getting late.”

Melissa gave the pup one last look, as he tried to follow them. She heard his mother give a sharp bark, and he turned running back to the den. She smiled. She knew he would be safe.

Conversation was good as they ate together. Buck was very aware of Melissa as she brushed against him serving him his meal. He wondered how much longer they would have to be sociable before they could slip off to his teepee and be alone. He watched her moving around and the want for her increased. Finally not able to stand it any longer, he got up and slipped away. He had to get his emotions under control before he did something foolish in front of his brother’s family.

He went to his teepee and started a fire in the pit so it would be warm when they came back a few hours later. Walking back towards Red Bear’s teepee, he took a seat under a tree not too far from the entranceway, and pulled out the flute his brother had loaned him.

Melissa was sitting with Red Bear talking quietly, when she heard a beautiful sound. It was a flute that someone was playing close by. She closed her eyes and listened with a smile on her face. She could get lost in the beautiful sound.

Red Bear leaned near and whispered, “Someone has come to court you, Gray Eyes!” She was startled and quickly looked his way. What had he just said? Court her? There was a question in her eyes. Red Bear continued. “When a young brave comes to the teepee of the maiden he intends to join with, and plays the flute for her, it is a sign to all the people in the village that he is courting her.”

“How do you know that they are courting me? It could be anyone in the village!” She looked his way. It would be so romantic if it were Buck outside the teepee that was playing the flute for her.

“Go and see Gray Eyes. I think you will not be surprised to find Running Buck sitting near the entrance playing a love song for you. He is openly asking you to accept his intentions.”

She quickly lifted the flap and looked outside the teepee. It had begun to snow. Sitting only a few yards away was Buck, his eyes closed, playing beautiful music just for her. She smiled as she watched the snowflakes falling round him. He didn’t seem to notice as he concentrated on the floating tune that he was playing.

Turning back to Red Bear, she quickly asked, “And what does the maiden do when this brave comes courting her? How does she let him know she agrees to this courting?” She knew that she wanted to follow the tradition of the village.

“After he has played for a time, go and join him. Let him know that your intentions match those of his own. In a few days, you will have a chance to let the village know that you have accepted his intentions.”

Excited, Melissa leaned near and kissed Red Bear’s cheek. Her face was flushed, and he could tell that she was very pleased with Running Buck’s show of intentions. He was glad now that he had given Running Buck the extra push that he needed. Gray Eyes had been waiting for this for some time. Slipping on her coat, she told Morning Flower, Autumn Wind, and Red Bear goodnight.

Buck had been watching the entrance to Red Bear’s teepee and had seen Melissa peer out towards him. He wondered what she was thinking. He knew that Red Bear would tell her what he was doing. Would she be pleased? He hoped that she would. Actually, he wondered why he had waited so long to do something like this? The time was drawing near for them to be joined. He would ask her soon.

He watched as she walked towards him. The snowflakes were falling all around her, landing in her hair. She was so beautiful. She stopped near him and stood listening to him play. When he had finished the song, he motioned her to come and sit with him. Settling herself down by his side, she slipped an arm through his and leaned her head on his shoulder as he began to play again. The snow and the cold didn’t bother them; they had their love to keep them warm.

Buck played for a little longer, and then turned to her. “I love you Gray Eyes!” She smiled as she leaned near to kiss him.

“It was beautiful Buck. Thank you. I never dreamed that something like this took place in the village as a sign of courting. It’s so romantic!”

Her kissed her again, slowly, savoring the feel of her lips against his. He pulled her into his lap, holding her close.

“I can’t believe that you’re out here in the snow playing a flute!” She looked up into his eyes. “I love you Buck Cross. Never doubt that.”

He smiled. “It’s worth bravin’ the cold to see your beautiful face light up when you knowed it was me out here. It was worth it jist to know that you was pleased that I cared enough to let the entire village know I love you and no one else. I decided that it was time I let the other braves know you was spoken for. Couldn’t let them have the chance to claim you.”

She laughed. “None of them stood a chance Buck. I didn’t know you knew how to play a flute. I learn something new about you every time we come here! You’ll have to play again for me.”

“Got to give me time to make a flute first. I borrowed this one from Red Bear.”

“Then I owe him a big thank you!” She buried her face in his coat as the wind blew around them. “Now I can’t believe that we’re both sitting out here under this tree in the snow!”

He laughed. “Come, its time we went to our teepee. It’s warm inside, like it will be in your arms!”

She shivered in delight as he sprang up from the ground with her still in his arms and carried her towards his teepee. The night would be a wonderful one.

The fire burned slowly in the pit. Melissa slipped down Buck’s body and stood in front of him. Nothing had changed since they had been there last. They moved to the sleeping furs and Buck pulled her down beside him.

It didn’t take long to undress one another. Both were in a hurry to feel skin against skin. It had been awhile since they had been there. Hands and mouths caressed each other, drawing passion with each touch.

Buck’s lips traced a pattern down over the side of her neck down to her breasts. He spent several minutes giving them special attention, then he moved further down her body until he was between her thighs. He tickled her with his tongue, causing her to giggle in pleasure. He teased her, caressed her, drawing closer each time to the junction of her legs. Then he was thrusting his tongue inside of her, her body arching towards him as he worked his magic over her. She ran her fingers through his silken hair, and moaned his name, as he tasted her.

Not being able to hold back much longer, Melissa pulled him back up her body. She wanted him to be inside of her when she reached that point of no return. When her body could hold back no longer, when the world could explode and neither of them would give a hang!

Changing positions, Buck found himself on his back, as she turned the tables on him and started kissing her way down his body. She teased and licked him from head to toe. Then her lips caressed his hardness, and he knew that he would go insane if she didn’t stop this sweet torture.

Reaching for her, he pulled her up the length of him, and flipped her to her back. In mere seconds he had entered her, only to pull out slightly, then enter her again. He did this several times, making her whimper each time that he pulled away. Finally, when she could stand it no more, she clutched him to her breast begging him to fill her. He thrust inside her almost savagely, and then moved slowly and carefully, driving her wild with sensuous desire for him. She wrapped her legs around his waist and in only seconds, they had reached that point where there was no turning back. They rode each wave of desire, climbing to the very top of the world, and then spinning back down together. Their breaths came in near gasps. Sweat covered their bodies from head to toe.

They lay still, Buck still a part of her, as their breathing returned to normal. Slowly, Melissa ran a finger down the side of Buck, causing him to jump. She whispered, “If the good Lord decided to end this ole world right now, I’d die a happy woman!”

In the darkness, he felt her smile, and his heart swelled with the love that he held for her. “But he cain’t end the world now...we have many things that we have to do together. Forever is a long time ya know. And that’s what you and I are going to be…FOREVER.” He kissed her slowly, and their loving was soon in full force again. Neither of them slept much that night!

Jimmy woke near dawn, and for a moment wondered where he was. Then he smiled to himself as he realized that he was in Sarah’s bed. She was pulled up close to his side. The fire had gone out, so he slipped from the bed to rekindle it. The house had gotten cold.

Looking out of the window as he waited for the fire to catch, he was surprised at the amount of snow that had fallen during the night. It didn’t appear that they would be doing much for the next few days. He could barely see, since it was just beginning to get daylight, but there were still some snowflakes falling. He was glad that he was there with Sarah. He wouldn’t be worried about her being alone. Plus he knew that they needed this time to get used to one another again. They still had a few things that they needed to talk about. From the looks of things, they would have plenty of time to do just that.

He returned to Sarah’s bedroom and slipped back into bed. He shivered slightly, and she snuggled close to him. It wasn’t long before sleep claimed him again, sweet dreams invading that sleep. Things were finally right in his world!

Buck and Melissa hadn’t been surprised at the white world they had awoken to the next morning. There was nearly a foot of snow by the time it stopped near noon. They made their way to Red Bear’s teepee and spent several hours there. Melissa worked more on her blanket, while Buck and Red Bear spent the time together. She was pleased with the design Autumn Wind had helped her create and she was nearly half finished when nightfall arrived.

Jimmy and Sarah spent their day loving one another and talking. Sarah felt she was finally getting to know James Butler Hickok. That was something that she had never thought to accomplish!

At one point, Jimmy looked her way with a very serious expression on his face. “Do you think Duell is happy with the way his life is now that he’s got the pardon and all?”

Sarah was a little startled by the question. “He seemed to be very glad that it was all over. I think his childhood was a lot like yours Jimmy. He was always in trouble, always on the run. He never knew what was around the next bend. But now that he’s able to lead a normal life without having to look over his shoulder, yes, I think he’s happy.”

“I jist wondered if there will ever be a time like that fer me. I mean, I see the future in a very different light from what I saw it yesterday. It’s all a cause a you! I want different things now! Used to be I jist wanted to live till tomorrow. Now that I have something’ more to live for, I wonder if’n I will ever have a day I ain’t lookin’ behind me!”

Sarah leaned down and kissed him gently. He looked so troubled. “Jimmy, as long as we have each other, our lives will be perfect. Maybe it won’t happen like it did for Duell, but we can make any situation perfect for us! But yes, I do think there will be a day when it will happen for you. Some day all these stories about you and your life will die down. Someone new will come along with an even bigger story, and it will take the place of “Wild Bill Hickok!” Then you’ll be able to breath a little easier. One day when we’re old and gray and sitting in our rocking chairs on the front porch, you can tell your grandchildren about the man you once were.”

“GRANDCHILDREN!” There was an astonished look on his face. As if he had ever dreamed of such a thing. “Do you really think I’ll live to see my grandchildren?” He was suddenly remembering what Grandmother Running Doe had told him. “Have many children…”

Sarah laughed. “Of course you will. Our children will be beautifu, and they’ll give us many grandchildren to love in our old age. One day, when we’ve been together for what seems an eternity, you’ll probably look at me and tell me you’re sick of having me around!”

Jimmy laughed and pulled her down on top of him. “Never lady! I’ll never tire of you!”

“Good, because I want a house full of children and twice as many grandchildren. And the only person that I want to father them is lying right here beside me!”

For a moment, Sarah was afraid that she had said too much. Jimmy was so silent as he looked at her. After all, they’d been dreaming. Why couldn’t she voice her dreams too? Slowly a beautiful smile broke out all over his face. She loved to see him smile. It happened so rarely.

“Then I think we should make all this here stuff official!” Getting up, he knelt down by the bedside on one knee. “Sarah Elizabeth Brooks, will you marry me?”

She was speechless. She knew that they’d been talking about the future, but she really hadn’t expected him to propose to her. Fact was, she never thought he would do it.

She was silent too long. Jimmy was worried. “Sarah, what is it? Ain’t you wantin’ to be my wife? Somehow I don’t see us havin’ all them little ones if’n we ain’t married!”

A tear slipped down her cheek. Then another and another.

“Sarah?” He rose from the floor, panic suddenly gripping his insides. What had he done wrong to make her cry? He thought this was the way you did it. He pulled her close in his arms. “What? What have I done?” He had thought that she would be thrilled.

“Oh Jimmy, I just can’t believe you’ve asked me this! I never expected you to! Are you sure this is what you want? You aren’t asking just because I was talking about having children and grandchildren, are you? I know I said that I wanted you to be their father, but it seemed to me we were both dreaming out loud, and I just thought that I would throw in a few of my own too!”

He sighed in relief. Lying down again, he pulled her with him. “Sure we was dreamin’, but we can make them dreams come true, together. I’s positive Sarah! It mite a took me what seems a life time to realize how I felt ‘bout you, and not to realize it were you who makes my life whole. I’d give you the moon and stars if’n I could reach ‘em!”

Sarah smiled through her tears that were still falling down her cheeks. “In that case, James Butler Hickok, yes, I’ll marry you.” She leaned near kissing him. She intended it to be a short kiss, but with his hand, he pressed her head closer to his and the kiss deepened. Soon they were making love to one another again. When it was over, Sarah dozed in the arms of the man she’d never dared to dream that she would have.

The following day, the snow began to melt away. Buck went hunting early that morning with some of the braves of the village. Melissa spent her time in Red Bear’s teepee working on the blanket. She would be almost finished today. She hoped that Buck would be pleased on Christmas Day with his gift. After lunch, she took a break and went to visit with Silver Wolf and her pups. The sun was shining brightly and most of the snow was gone from around the wolf’s den. That was where Red Bear found her.

“Gray Eyes is bored today?”

She looked up at the sound of the familiar voice and smiled. “No, I just wanted to visit with the little guys for awhile.” She was holding her pick of the litter close to her breast. “The next time that we come for a visit, they will be old enough to be out on their own.”

Red Bear fed Silver Wolf a chunk of meat that he had brought for her, and scratched her behind the ears. “Little ones grow fast. It is time you and Running Buck joined as man and wife so that you can start a family of your own.”

Melissa blushed. “Maybe some day. I feel that we have gotten a little closer to that future while we have been here.”

“You were pleased with Running Buck’s love songs?”

She smiled. “Oh yes.”

“Good. Now it is time for Gray Eyes to let the village know that she was accepted Running Buck’s show of intentions.”

Melissa looked surprised. “Buck knows that I’ve accepted his intentions. He knows that I love him.”

“Yes, but the village does not. Tonight there is a maiden dance. Several of the maiden’s plan to take a husband in the next few weeks.”

“Maiden dance?” She looked worried. “I can’t dance as your maiden’s do.”

“I remember a visit, you danced well with Running Buck.”

Melissa blushed again. She remembered that visit very well. She and Buck had spent a beautiful night in his teepee after that dance. “That night was special.”

Red Bear smiled at the blush that covered her face. “Tonight could be as well. It is custom in our village that when a maiden has chosen a brave, she joins in the dance of the maidens. It is a special dance. A dance that calls on the spirits that walk the spirit trail to bless the intentions for a prosperous future.”

Melissa thought of Grandmother Running Doe. She already blessed their intentions. But there might be someone who Buck had been close to that walked the spirit path that should have the chance to bless them. “What must I do to join in this dance?”

Red Bear and Melissa talked at length about the dance and what she should do. They planned to keep it a secret from Buck.

When Buck returned from hunting, he found Melissa busy helping Morning Flower an Autumn Wind prepare supper. She smiled his way as he sat down by Red Bear.

The sky was clear that night. Stars twinkled their hellos as the fire pit was readied. Before long, a roaring fire was blazing. Buck and Red Bear had gone to join the other braves around the fire. Buck knew tonight was the maiden dance, but thought nothing of it.

Morning Flower weaved flowers into Melissa’s hair, and Autumn Wind loaned her a doe skin dress. When they had finished preparing her, they took her to the spot in the village where the other maidens were waiting. They were given white fur robes and a mask to put over their faces.

The drums sang out into the night and that was the signal for the women to come towards the fire pit. The braves were sitting around the fire on mats. Buck was beside Red Bear. He wondered where Melissa was. As he glanced around, he realized that none of the women were among the men. He remembered that the women came in with the maidens. He had seen the dance only once before when he was young. The young braves considered themselves very lucky to be chosen by a maiden to dance with them under the while buffalo robes. Up until that point, the braves did not know if the maiden of their choice had agreed to their courting. He had not stayed long enough in the village to be chosen by a maiden. But that didn’t matter. All that did matter was that Melissa loved him. She was all he needed.

The women of the village slipped into place beside their husbands as the maidens began to circle the fire pit, dancing to the beat of the drums. Their movements were light and flowing, the robes and masks covering their appearance. No one could tell who was who. They circled the fire pit several times, then started stopping in front of the braves that they had chosen to share their loves with.

Buck was watching one of the braves that he had hunted with that day being chosen to his left. They had spoken that morning of Pretty Flower. She was the one that he had been courting for several moons. He had hoped that she would be among the dancers that night. Buck smiled as he watched her wrap the white robe around his friend’s shoulders, and they danced together.

Suddenly he felt a presence in front of him. Looking up he was startled to see that a maiden had stopped in front of him. She must have mistaken him for someone else. Holding the buffalo robe high, so that he could not tell who she was, she beckoned him to join her in the dance. He looked towards Red Bear with a question in his eyes. Who was picking him? He wasn’t interested in any of the maidens in the village. Red Bear leaned over and spoke in his ear.

“Go Running Buck. Do you not see that the maiden beckons you to join her? Go be hers.”

“But Melissa…”

Red Bear stood up and pulled Running Buck with him. “Gray Eyes will understand…go join this young maiden that has chosen you!” He gave Buck a push towards the maiden.

Melissa had been watching from under the robe and mask. Apparently, Buck was stunned that he was being chosen. That meant that he had no idea that he was about to be dancing with her. She smiled to herself. He would be very surprised.

Slowly, Buck walked towards her, looking around for Melissa. Where was she? And what did Red Bear mean that she would understand? He couldn’t belong to another!

The maiden lifted the robe and wrapped it around them both. Slowly their bodies moved together in sensual movement, the beating of the drums adding to the effect. As her body brushed against his, Buck felt the familiar feelings beginning to grow inside him. He couldn’t be attracted to someone else!

The dance continued for several moments. Her body stirred him. Her arms circled his shoulders as she held the robe tightly around them. She fit so familiar in his embrace. It was as if they had been together this way before. They had circled the fire twice now, and Buck couldn’t believe that his body was so on fire for the woman in his arms. Where was Melissa? Was it possible that this was her that he held so closely? Was that why she felt so familiar in his arms? Her movements were so graceful, and he remembered another dance that they had been invited to join in. The more she moved against him, the more he was sure that this was his woman that he held in his arms.

The drums stopped and the dancers moved as one to stand in front of Red Bear. Together, the maidens all took off their masks and turned in the robes towards the braves that they had chosen. Buck watched as Melissa slipped the mask from her face. There was a big smile on her lips.

“Gray Eyes!” He sighed with relief as she began to laugh.

“Who were you expecting it to be? Is there someone else in the village that you wish to hold in your arms?”

He pulled her close and kissed her. “Never beautiful lady! Never!” The kiss was a passionate one. Right then he wanted to carry her off and make love to her.

Red bear smiled towards his brother and Gray Eyes. He could tell that Running Buck was pleased that she had shown the entire village that she cared for him. As was the custom, Red Bear blessed the couples and called for a wedding ceremony to be held soon in all their honors. The drums began to beat again, and the couples danced together once more around the fire pit.

Buck held Melissa in his arms as they moved together. He knew that they had both declared their feelings to everyone there that night. It was time that he asked her to become his wife. Picking her up, he carried her away from the fire and towards the teepee they shared. She didn’t protest as she wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.

Jimmy and Sarah had done the chores around the ranch together and had played in the snow. Jimmy knew that he needed to ride to town and let Teaspoon know that he was all right, but he didn’t want to leave Sarah.

“Want to ride into town with me?” They were standing in the living room in front of the fire getting warm after their frolic in the snow.

“Not until this black eye clears up. Go ahead. I have a few things that can keep me busy here if you need to go.”

“I need to let Teaspoon know where I am.”

Sarah smiled. “He probably figured it out! After all, he is the one that told you Jake was out here!”

“You’re probably right.”

Sarah leaned up and kissed his lips. “Go ahead and tell him we’re okay out here. I’ll have supper ready when you get back!”

He pulled her close in his arms and started kissing her. Sarah melted against him.

“We keep this up, and I’ll never git to town!”

Sarah laughed. “Go. I’ll see you soon!” She pulled away from him and gave him a light push towards the door.

He laughed as he pulled on his coat and headed for the barn. It wouldn’t take him long to see Teaspoon and get back.

Teaspoon was sitting in his office doing the dreaded paper work. He’d thought briefly about Jimmy wondering where he was, but he had a feeling he knew. He’d gone to take care of Sarah. Jake Colter had come back into town two days before with a bullet in his shoulder. When he’d questioned him, Jake had shrugged it off saying he wasn’t planning to press any charges. As soon as the doc had patched him up, he’d ridden out of town in the opposite direction from which he’d come.

Jimmy felt like Teaspoon was at the office, so that was where he headed. He’d been right, and wasn’t surprised to find him sitting at the desk. “You look like you’s workin’ hard!”

Teaspoon looked up at the sound of his voice. Taking his spectacles off, he stood and walked towards him. “Is you alrite son? I was beginnin’ to worry bout you!”

“I’m fine.”

“How’s Miss Sarah? Jake Colter come ridin’ back into town with a bullet in his shoulder.”

“Sarah’s fine. Got one purdy black eye though!”

Teaspoon looked startled. “A black eye? Who in their rite mind would’a hit such a purdy woman as Miss Sarah?”

“Jake Colter! Course that was after she’d done shot him for attackin’ her!”

“Attackin’ her? You’s shore she’s okay? Does she want to press charges against him?”

“I don’t think so. It’s over and she ain’t wantin’ to see him no more. I’m jist glad you told me he was headed out there!”

“Me too, son!”

“Well, I jist rode in to tell you I’d be stayin’ at the ranch with Sarah till Melissa and Buck gits back. Didn’t want you worrin’ ‘bout me!”

“Guess you’s two got your problems worked out then?”

“Yeah, we did. We’re gettin’ married! See you later Teaspoon.”

At that, Jimmy headed out the door. “That’s nice son.” He turned back towards his desk and was about to sit back down when the words Jimmy had said sunk in. “Gettin’ married?.” He hurried towards the door, but Jimmy had already ridden off. A big smile went across Teaspoon’s face. This was exactly what he’d been in hopes would happen between them.

After they had made perfect love, Buck held Melissa tightly against his body. This was where she belonged. His world was complete with her in it. Without her, he couldn’t exist. Looking down at her, he brushed a stand of hair from her eyes.

“Melissa it meant the world to me that you joined the maiden dance and chose me as your brave!”

She smiled. “Well, you let everyone know you cared for me when you played the flute. When Red Bear told me about the dance and what it meant, I knew that I had to be a part of it.”

“So he knew all long that you was gonna dance?”

“He did! I guess he jist wants the two of us to be together forever.”

“Do you? Want us to be together forever?”

She rose on elbows and looked down into his eyes. “I love you very much Buck. When the time is right, we will be together forever. My future is with you, no one else.”

“Then it’s time!” He smiled as he leaned near to kiss her.

“Time?”

“Time you and me become man and wife. Will you marry me, Melissa?”

For a moment, she just looked at him. She had known that he would eventually ask her, but she hadn’t expected it to be this soon.

“Well, will ya?” He had a worried look on his face.

“Oh Buck. Of course I will!”

He smiled as he pulled her down on top of his chest. Their lips fastened together and the passion flared high between them once again. Both of them knew as they made love, that it was just the beginning of many loving nights together.

Melissa fell asleep in Buck’s arms. She was content, more than she had ever been. She wanted to marry him. He was the only one that she would ever love. She started to dream, and suddenly Grandmother Running Doe was there holding her hand.

“Come my child, I will show you the future….”

The rest of the sleeping hours were spent looking into the future. Melissa saw her wedding that would be held at the village. Teaspoon and one of the elders officiated. Everyone was there. All the riders, Rachel, Sarah, Duell and a woman and small child. Melissa assumed that they were Nora and Ethan. The wedding was very beautiful and both she and Buck were very happy. Then they were in the later years. There were several children around them, in a beautiful log cabin. Melissa smiled. She knew that they would stay at the ranch with Sarah for a while after they were married. Then they would build a place of their own. Sarah would probably sell them a plot of land that they could call their own. Then she saw them, as they grew older together. Their children
were grown. Life was going to be good for them. Grandmother Running Doe wanted her to know that this was what was right. As the dawn began to break in the sky, grandmother bade her farewell. She hugged her close, and Melissa had a feeling that she might not see her again in this lifetime. She had come to show her the direction her life was to take, and to help her in any way that was necessary to make it become that. That task was complete now. “Good-bye my grandchild. Running Buck will keep you safe from now on.” With that, she was gone. Melissa shed a tear in her sleep. She would miss seeing her grandmother’s spirit.

Two days later Buck and Melissa were headed back to Sarah’s. It was late afternoon, and the snow was nearly gone. Melissa had finished her Christmas gift for Buck and had it safely tucked away in her saddlebags. Buck had made Red Bear promise once again that he would keep the wolf pup that Melissa had chosen safe for him. Christmas was only three weeks away, and he planned to slip back to the village and pick the little one up for her.

Jimmy and Sarah were sitting in the kitchen when they arrived. They had spent most of the day working the horses after their three days rest from the snow. The weather was a little warmer, but they had taken a break for some hot coffee.

Melissa and Buck didn’t notice anyone around when they rode up to the house. They tied their mounts to the railing at the porch and stepped inside. Melissa was the first through the door. “Sarah, we’re back!”

Sarah quickly jumped from the table and hurried across the living room to hug her best friend. “I’m so glad you’re back!” Jimmy had followed her in from the kitchen and both Melissa and Buck were surprised to see him there. After hugging Melissa, Sarah stepped over and gave Buck a hug. He smiled her way, and then looked towards Jimmy. If he were there, then it must mean that things were straight between them. Did this mean that they were together again? He sure hoped so!”

Melissa gazed at Sarah. Something wasn’t right with her. She caught her by the arm and turned her to face her once more. “What in the world happened to your eye?”

The color was almost gone from around it, but you could tell that it had been bruised. Sarah grinned. “I ended up in a fist fight, and Jimmy rescued me!”

“You what?” Melissa reached out to touch her face. “This looks bad.”

“You think it looks bad now, you should’a seen it the day you left for the village.”

Melissa’s mouth fell open. “The day we left? Who did you get in a fight with?”

“Jake Colter!”

Buck had been standing beside Melissa with a frown on his face. He hadn’t liked what he was hearing. “Then he did come here! I was afraid that he would if’n he got wind that you was out here alone.”

“Come on in the kitchen. I’m sure you can use some coffee. I’ll tell you all about it.” Sarah led the way, and they were soon all sitting around the table talking and getting warm.

“I can’t believe that he would be stupid enough to think you wouldn’t shoot him! It was as if he were daring you not to!” Melissa stated.

“Well, he best be glad I wasn’t aiming to kill him. Cause we all know I’m not afraid to if the time calls for it.”

“I don’t think Colter will be ‘round here again any time soon. He probably had his fill of Rock Creek!” Jimmy laughed.

“I certainly hope so. The nerve of some people. Just force themselves on you! I never thought that he would be like that. Course the more I came to know the man, the more I didn’t trust him.”

“I guess one learns the hard way sometimes. At any rate, I don’t think I have to worry about him any more! Not as long as Jimmy is around to protect me.” She smiled and reached over to squeeze his hand. Both Melissa and Buck noticed. So, things were okay between them.

Jimmy stood up and looked towards the window. “It’s gittin’ dark. Best take care a them horses a fore nite fall. Go with me Buck? I’m shore Melissa and Sarah have some a them women things they want to talk ‘bout!”

Buck smiled and leaned over to kiss Melissa. Then he followed Jimmy out of the house.

Sarah got up to start something for supper, and Melissa sat there watching her. She was different then she had been when they’d left. She seemed really happy now. “Well, you gonna tell me or not?”

Sarah looked her way. “Tell you what?”

“You know darn well what! About you and Jimmy! You two weren’t even speaking when Buck and I left for the village!”

Sarah smiled. “What would make you think something went on?” She was beginning to peel potatoes, and she turned her way with a grin.

“He wouldn’t be here now if you two hadn’t gotten things straight! Tell me about it! Then I have some news to tell you!” Melissa smiled.

“Okay. Since you’ve twisted my arm…!” Sarah laughed as she started to tell Melissa everything that had happened. When she had finished her story, Melissa was stunned. Like Sarah, she had never expected Jimmy to change, although she had hoped that he would.

“So he loves you. Where does it take you from here?”

Sarah smiled. “How bout a wedding?”

“You’re kidding! Aren’t you?” Melissa dropped the vegetables that she had been washing and grabbed Sarah in a hug.

“No, I’m not kidding! He asked me to marry him. Can you believe it?” They were laughing and crying as they hugged one another.

“I’m so happy for you. I know you’re thrilled. You’ve never stopped loving him. When’s the big day?”

“Probably in the spring. We haven’t really talked about it yet. Now tell me, what’s your news?”

“How bout a double wedding? Buck asked me to marry him while we were at the village.”

Once again, they were hugging one another and shedding a few tears. When they had gotten calmed down, Melissa filled Sarah in on all the romantic things that had happened at the village. Sarah could tell that Melissa was thrilled about her upcoming vows. Buck and Jimmy were the men that they were supposed to be with.

“The night he asked me, grandmother appeared to me again. I think maybe it was the last time that I’ll see her on this side of life. It was like a farewell. I’m going to miss her.” Melissa sounded sad, and Sarah hugged her again.

“You know, I have the sneaking suspicion that she appeared to Jimmy too!”

“What makes you say that?” Melissa’s interest was snagged once more.

“He made mention when we were talking that Duell had spoken to him about me. He must have told him he was too hard headed to realize what a good thing I was for him. Then he mentioned something about how your grandmother had been right, too, about him being hard headed.”

Melissa smiled. “I knew she would help if I asked her to! She’s always helped. So I guess what she came here to do is finished. We probably won’t see her again!”

“But if she accomplished what she was supposed to do, then she can rest easier now. Maybe it was something that she had to do before she was free to walk the spirit path with her loved ones…you never know!”

“I’m just glad that she was there to guide us all! Who knows what would have happened if she hadn’t been?”

Buck and Jimmy had led the two horses towards the barn in silence. Jimmy was trying to decide how to tell him that he and Sarah were getting married, and Buck was trying to find a way to ask Jimmy what was happening between them without ruffling his feathers! They finally looked at one another and both started talking at once.

“Buck…”

“Jimmy…”

They laughed, and Jimmy looked his way. “Yeah, you first.”

“I was jist wonderin...and I knows it ain’t none a my business, but what’s goin’ on ‘tween you and Sarah? I want her to be happy. She loves you Hickok. I ain’t gonna see her hurt again!”

Jimmy smiled. “Don’t worry Buck. I ain’t gonna hurt her no more. I love her too!”

“You what?” Buck was startled by his words. He couldn’t believe what Jimmy had just said.

“We got it all talked out. I finally realized that I love her. Took me forever, but I knows now how hard headed I was ‘bout it all. Duell tried to tell me, you tried, Lou tried, even Melissa’s grandmother! Would a looked like I’d a had ‘nough sense to listen to one a yous!”

“Main thing is, you know it now!”

“And I asked her to marry me.”

Buck’s mouth really hit the ground with that piece of information! “I cain’t believe it! I never thought Jimmy Hickok would ever git hitched!”

“Neither did I! But it’s what’s rite. I love her. We mite not have a whole life together, but as she’s already said, no matter how long we has together, it’s gonna be happy. Sides, Melissa’s grandmother done told me we’s gonna have a lot a kids!”

Buck laughed and slapped Jimmy on the back. “When’s the big day?”

“Ain’t shore. Probably in the spring, when it’s a mite warmer.”

“I should tell you my news too!”

“Somethin’ happen at the village?”

“I asked Melissa to marry me there!” Buck was smiling.

Jimmy reached for his friend and hugged him. “I know she done said yes, or you wouldn’t be a grinnin’. Guess we both got big news to take back to the station! Though I done told Teaspoon. Cept I ain’t shore he understood me.”

“Oh he probably did. Jist wait til we git back!”

“You stayin’ tnite ain’t ya?”

“If’n Sarah don’t mind. It’s gonna be hard goin’ back to the bunkhouse without holdin’ her at nite! A body gits used to somethin’ like that real quick!”

“Don’t it though. I’ll hate tellin’ Sarah good-bye too, but we’re gonna have to make runs again soon. Now that the snows gone, the mail a be movin’ again!”

“Guess we best go back tomorrow mornin’ and see what Teaspoon has fer us.”

They finished feeding the horses and headed back inside to the women they loved. It was a beautiful night for them all.

Teaspoon sat at the table with the other riders and Rachel. It was rather quiet around the place. Lou looked up at him and asked, “You seed Jimmy, Teaspoon?” She was beginning to worry about him. He hadn’t been there since the two of them had talked.

“Yeah, I seed him. He came by the office the other day. He’s out at Miss Sarah’s ranch, helpin’ her out till Buck and Melissa gits back from the village.”

“Helpin’ her out? Must mean them two’s on speakin’ terms again.” Lou grinned.

“Guess yous could say that.” Teaspoon looked at the people sitting around the table. Should he share the other news with them? “I’s also knows somethin’ else, but if’n I tells you, yous has to promise not to breath a word a it to no one till Jimmy and Miss Sarah tells ya ‘bout it!”

Rachel looked towards Teaspoon. She could tell that he was just busting at the seams to let the cat outta the bag. “Teaspoon, you sure you ought to tell whatever it is?”

“Nos I ain’t. But since Jimmy ain’t come back yet, I’s cain’t wait no longer to share this here good news!”

“Okay, then what is it?” Kid’s interested had been snagged.

“You’s jist told us it was good news. So where’s the harm in tellin’ it?” Cody grinned.

“Sounds rite to me! Come on Teaspoon, don’t be leavin’ us hangin’!” Noah looked around the table and the others shook their heads in agreement.

“Well, a little bird done went and told me Jimmy and Miss Sarah is gonna git married!”

Cody dropped his fork onto the tin plate with a loud clatter. Noah nearly chocked on a piece of biscuit. Kid let out a “I ain’t belivin’ it.” And Lou, she just sat there grinning. Then they were all talking at once.

Teaspoon held up his hand. “Wait a minute…wait a minute. I’s cain’t tells you no more ‘n that!”

“Who’s this little bird?” Kid asked.

“Yeah, anyone we know?” Cody threw in.

“He cain’t know what he’s talkin’ ‘bout!” Noah looked towards Teaspoon.

“Well he does. It was Jimmy hisself that done told me! I reckon he’d know if no one else did.” Teaspoon leaned back in his chair pulling on his suspenders.

“Jimmy?!”

“Yeah, that was the last thing he mentioned a fore he left to go back to Miss Sarah’s ranch.”

“I still cain’t believe it!” Kid was shaking his head.

“Someone’s gots to ride out there to her ranch and make shore he ain’t runnin’ no fever an a talkin’ outta his head!” Cody decided.

“He wasn’t. An nos you cain’t go riddin’ out there. I ‘spect Buck and Jimmy’ll be back tomorrow. The snows all melted. Time the mail were runnin’ again. Now you all has to promise not one word to anyone. Not even Jimmy. Let him tells you.”

Teaspoon grinned as he got up from the table. He’d been holdin’ that in for two days! Rachel followed him out onto the porch. “You shouldn’t a done that!”

He just grinned. “Couldn’t help it! I’s had to tell someone. Sides, everone’ll know soon ‘nough!”

Rachel just shook her head as Teaspoon headed into town to make his last rounds before night fall. The station was a buzz that night.

The following day, Buck and Jimmy rode back to the station together. Melissa and Sarah were planning to ride into town and pick up supplies. Then later they were coming to the station so the four of them could tell their news.

Teaspoon met them at the barn. “Lo boys. Good to see you back.” He was grinning. “Things okay at Miss Sarah’s, Jimmy?”

“They’s fine.”

“Houw ‘bout with Red Bear’s village Buck?”

“No problems Teaspoon.”

They were beginning to unsaddle their horses. Teaspoon was still standing there grinning. Jimmy glanced his way then took a double take. “Is you alrite Teaspoon?”

“I’s fine son.” The silly grin was still on his face.

“Think Rachel would mind if’n Melissa and Sarah join us for supper tonite?”

“I don’t ‘spect she’d care. You could ask her though. Somethin’ special ‘bout tonite?”

Jimmy knew what Teaspoon was referring to, but he didn’t let on. “Nope, jist wanted to visit.”

“Oh, I see. Well, I’m shore Rachel won’t mind none. Buck you’s up fer the run tomorrow.”

“Okay. I’ll be ready.”

Teaspoon turned and left the barn. He knew Jimmy was going to break the news that night. Whistling, he headed for town.

“What do you ‘spose was his problem?” Buck looked Jimmy’s way.

“I think he was waitin’ on me to confirm what I told him in the office the other day. Has to be with that silly grin on his face!”

“Wait ‘til he hears Melissa ‘n me plannin’ the same thing!”

Everyone Jimmy met up at the station with that day, had the same silly grin on their face. No one mentioned why, and Jimmy was positive that Teaspoon had told everyone, but had made them swear they wouldn’t mention it.

Sarah and Melissa rode into town to pick up supplies early that morning. Tompkin’s store was rather crowded, so Melissa decided that she would stay outside on the buckboard while Sarah went to place her order. She really didn’t need anything, so she sat enjoying the weak sun that was shinning through the clouds.

She had her eyes closed and her mind was drifting when she heard someone say, “Scuse me…”

Looking around she noticed a woman and a little girl standing beside the buckboard.

“Scuse me, but are you Melissa Crawford?”

Melissa wondered who this woman was and why she was asking. Most of the towns people looked the other way when she was there. Of course she hadn’t been in town since Founder’s Day.

“Yes, I am. Can I help you?” She smiled at the little girl. She looked as if she might be 7 or 8. She timidly returned the smile.

“I’m Elizabeth Johnson. My Jenny here wants to learn to play the piano. We just moved here and one of the townsfolk told us you might be interested in teaching. We have a piano. We brought it all the way from New York!”

Melissa knew her mouth must be on the ground. She never dreamed anyone in this town would help her get a student. In fact, she hadn’t even advertised that she was interested in teaching. She figured it wouldn’t be worth her breath!

“Well, uh sure. I’d be willing to teach her. When would you want to start?”

“Oh boy! Is tomorrow too soon?” Jenny burst out and the smile that lit her face made Melissa smile. Here was someone who really wanted to learn. She would be a wonderful student.

“No, tomorrow would be fine!”

They spent the next few minutes discussing Melissa’s fee for the lessons, and the directions to Sarah’s ranch. They had just walked off when Sarah came out with her arms full.

“Stop day dreaming Crawford and come help me!”

Sarah laughed as she jumped at her voice. Melissa quickly got down and helped her load the buckboard.

“You aren’t gonna to believe what just happened to me.”

“What? I’ve seen too many miracles this week to not believe in ‘em!”

Melissa grinned. “Well this is another one! A Mrs. Johnson just walked up to me and asked me if I’d be willing to teach her daughter Jenny piano!”

“Do what?” Sarah stopped what she was doing and looked her way startled.

“Told you, you wouldn’t believe me! But it just happened. Someone in this town told her I might be interested in teaching her child. They just moved here from New York.”

“Well either someone is feeling guilty about all the things that this town has done to you and wants to help set them straight, or they have all forgotten what went on at the church! Maybe enough time has gone by.”

“Whatever caused it, I’m grateful! She’s coming tomorrow at 2 p.m. I hope that’s okay.”

“Of course it’s okay.” Sarah could see that Melissa was really excited about this. She hugged her. “One way or another it all works out.”

They smiled at one another and headed for home.

Buck and Jimmy went after the ladies early that afternoon. Melissa was still excited about her first student, and Buck was amazed that someone was being helpful to them. Maybe the town was beginning to accept things.

Everyone was waiting at the station when the four rode in, and all had that same silly grin on their faces. The one like Teaspoon had that morning. It was way too early for supper, but they were all sitting around the table.

“Okay, what’s goin’ on here?” Buck looked their way.

“Nuthin’! We’s jist thought we’d welcome you’s all back!” Lou was grinning from ear to ear.

“Sit down and tell us ‘bout your visit with your brother.”

“You ain’t never asked a fore.” Buck looked confused, but he and Melissa sat down and soon Jimmy and Sarah were following them.

Buck and Melissa filled them in on what was happening at the village. Everyone seemed to listen with rapt attention.

“There is one other minor detail they left out,” Sarah was grinning. “These two are gonna get married.”

Everyone looked their way totally shocked. Here they were expecting Jimmy and Sarah to drop this information in their laps, and it was Buck and Melissa instead!

“But we thought it was Jimmy and Sarah that were gettin’ married!” Cody looked disappointed. If he’d known it was Buck and Melissa, he wouldn’t have gotten so worked up. He’d known that they would eventually marry.

“Yeah, Teaspoon done told us.” Noah was looking their way.

Teaspoon’s face was getting red. What if he’d been wrong? What if he hadn’t heard what he thought he had? Jimmy and Sarah were both looking his way. He was embarrassed.

“Well, I’s…”

It was no use; they couldn’t hold it any longer. Jimmy burst out laughing, and Sarah was soon following.

“So this were what all them silly grins were fer today!”

“Then it’s true? You and Sarah is getting’ married?” Cody looked hopeful.

“Yeah, it’s true!”

Cody let out a “Ya-Hoo” and was jumping up to hug them both. Then he was hugging Buck and Melissa.

“I’m happy fer you too! I jist never thought Hickok would git married!”

“Me either.” Noah was hugging them too.

“Well I guess he ain’t sick after all! If’n Sarah is agreein’ to this, it must be true.” Kid grinned. “Congratulations to all four of you.”

Lou smiled. “I want to help plan these two weddin’!”

So the rest of the afternoon and evening was spent talking over their plans. Sarah and Jimmy’s wedding would be first since Melissa was unsure when Duell could arrive. She had written him a letter that afternoon telling him what was happening. No dates had been set, they were just saying spring.

Melissa’s first piano lesson went well. Jenny would have no problems learning to play. Before Christmas arrived, she had four other students. Children that had been in her choir at the church. Even their mother’s seemed friendly.

Christmas was only days away. Buck and Jimmy had been helping Sarah and Melissa decorate the ranch for the holidays. Sarah had invited everyone over for Christmas Eve. The mantle and hearth were decorated with pine boughs and holly. Jimmy had cut a cedar tree, and they had spent half the night stringing popcorn and cranberries to place on it. Candles were in the windows and wreaths were on the doors and even the barn.

The gifts were wrapped and placed under the tree. Sarah had loved the blanket that Melissa had made for Buck. Sarah was still planning to give Mariah to Jimmy. He’d been spending a lot of time with him since they had gotten things straight between them.

Buck slipped off early Christmas Eve morning to get the wolf pup from Red Bear, and Jimmy was in Tompkin’s store buying a broach that he had spotted for Sarah. Everything was pointing to a very merry Christmas.

Early evening found everyone on the way to Sarah’s ranch. It was a clear night with what seemed a zillion stars out. Sarah and Melissa were putting the finishing touches on the meal when the knock sounded on the door.

Everyone filed in carrying gifts, placing them under the tree. They couldn’t believe how much time they had spent decorating. Their meal was delicious. Sarah had cooked turkey, dressing, corn, several vegetables, and bread. There were also several fruits and three different kinds of pies. They all ate till they were ready to explode.

After the dishes were cleaned and put away, they moved to the living room in front of the fire. There Melissa played the piano for them, and they sang Christmas songs for nearly an hour. It ended with Teaspoon once again telling the story of the birth of baby Jesus, as he did every year. Melissa was snuggled near in Buck’s embrace, as was Sarah in Jimmy’s. There was so much love in the room. Everything was perfect.

Finally it was time to open their gifts. Sarah had given Buck a new sheath for his knife that he carried strapped to his leg. To Melissa she had given a new set of music books that Tompkins had ordered for her right after she and Duell had gotten the piano for her.

Melissa gave Sarah a blanket that she had purchased from Autumn Wind and Morning Flower at the village. It had a beautiful Indian design on it. To Jimmy she gave a warm scarf and new gloves. Lastly she handed the wrapped package to Buck.

“I hope you like this. It’s my first attempt, but I think I did pretty good on it if I have to say so myself.” She smiled and he wondered what it could possibly be.

Opening the package, he was very surprised. It was the blanket that she had worked on so hard while they were visiting the village. He knew that she had done it all herself. “It’s beautiful Melissa!” He leaned over and kissed her before he passed the blanket around, as he told everyone about all the hard work that she had put into it. He was very proud of her. She could tell.

Jimmy handed Sarah a small wrapped package, and she smiled. She had no idea what he could have gotten her. Opening it, she found a beautiful broach, one that she was sure that she had seen in Tompkins’s store. She had nearly bought it herself, but it had been rather expensive. “Oh Jimmy. You shouldn’t have spent all your money on this!”

He smiled. “But you’re worth it!”

She leaned over and kissed him softly. Then she pinned the broach onto her dress, smiling as she showed it off.

“Okay everyone make yourselves at home. I need to borrow Jimmy for a minute. His gift isn’t under the tree. He has to go with me outside to get it.” Sarah grinned as she got up from the floor and reached out her hand to him. Everyone started making derogatory remarks and laughing as they headed for the door.

“Matter a fact, I need to see Melissa outside too. Come on!”

“Hey what is this? Don’t we git to see what they git?”

“In a minute!” Sarah yelled back as Buck and Melissa followed them outside.

Sarah led Jimmy to the barn. Opening the door, she lit the lantern and led him towards the stall that held Mariah. Jimmy wasn’t sure what she was doing. What could she possibly have out here for him as a gift? She stopped in front of Mariah’s stall and held the lantern up high. There was a big red bow tied around Mariah’s neck. She looked his way as Mariah held his head over the stall door and nuzzled towards Jimmy. “Merry Christmas, Jimmy!”

Jimmy was speechless for all of a second. Mariah continued to push his way towards Jimmy, and he finally stroked his head.

“Sarah, you shore?”

“Positive, Jimmy. He belongs to you. I’ve seen the way the two of you are around one another. Enjoy him.”

Jimmy gave her a hug and kissed her gently. Looking down into her eyes, he whispered, “I love you!”

She smiled. “I love you too.”

As she started to kiss him again, Mariah pushed his way between them. Jimmy laughed and reached to scratch behind his ears.

“See I told you so!” Sarah chuckled.

Buck had taken Melissa out to the buckboard. She had no idea what he had for her. As they drew nearer, she could hear a crying sound. Looking over the side of the buckboard, she spotted him. “Oh Buck!” She quickly jumped to the back of the buckboard and reached to take the wolf pup out of the cage that he was in. He quickly licked her face and ears as he recognized her. “Oh thank you so much!” She joyously hugged the pup and gave him a quick kiss. Buck laughed.

“Maybe I shouldn’t a given him to you! Looks as if he’s gonna git all my kisses!”

Melissa laughed. “Don’t you worry none! There’ll be plenty for you.” Hugging Buck near, she kissed him. “Thank you so much. I wanted to bring him home with me when we left the village, but I didn’t know if I should or not.”

“When Red Bear and I realized that he was your pick, he promised to save him for me. He’s all yours!”

Hugging the pup close to her chest, they started back towards the house. Buck picked up the blanket and wooden cage and carried them inside.

“Well, where are these gifts that you couldn’t put under the tree?” Cody looked skeptical. Melissa placed the wolf pup on the floor, and he slowly sniffed his way around to everyone. They all thought he was adorable.

“Where’s your gift Jimmy?” Lou looked his way with a raised eyebrow.

“Out in the barn! Sarah gave me the most beautiful stallion in the world! His name is Mariah, and he can run just like the wind he’s named after! You all have to go see him.” Jimmy was grinning from ear to ear. Sarah knew that he was very happy with the gift that she had chosen for him.

By now, the wolf pup had made his rounds sniffing everyone and was back in Melissa’s lap. He was busily licking her face and she loved every minute of it! Buck just smiled as he watched her.

“Sarah, I hope you don’t mind me givin’ him to her. Guess I shoulda asked first.”

Sarah smiled from her place in the floor in front of the fire. “Heavens no. I don’t mind. He’s beautiful. I’ve never seen a white wolf or one with blue eyes before. What are you going to name him?”

Melissa sat quietly watching the pup. She loved him so much. She’d never dreamed that he’d be hers, so she hadn’t even thought of a name. “I’m not really sure. Buck what is white wolf in Kiowa?” The pup jumped up and licked her nose and everyone laughed. Melissa just hugged him close.

“Samoyed.”

“Samoyed...that just might be it.” She scratched him behind the ears. “How bout it? Do you like the name Samoyed?” He licked her again, and she giggled.

“He’ll be a good guardian once he grows up. At least he’ll let us know if Jake Colter decides to come back around,” Sarah laughed and Melissa raised the pup up so that she could look directly into his eyes.

“I’ll teach you who to take a bite out of.” Once again they all were laughing.

It was late when everyone left. Jimmy and Buck were spending the night at the ranch. Melissa fed the pup left over scraps, and then settled him in the wooden cage on a blanket for the night. Then she snuggled into Buck’s arms.

Jimmy and Sarah lay awake talking about Mariah and the ranch. Jimmy was talking about starting to ride Mariah on the runs and leaving Cisco at the ranch. Sarah didn’t mind. She liked Cisco. She might start riding him herself. Of course she loved riding Thunder Heart too. It would be a tough decision to make.  Who to ride? She wanted to breed Thunder Heart. Perhaps she would give him a rest for awhile.

The New Year began and the snows came. For several weeks at a time, one didn’t see the ground. All they saw was white. Melissa’s piano students had to miss their lessons, but they were all doing really well. Her number of students was still growing.

Samoyed was really growing. He had a slender body and long legs. He looked so funny running around. After the horses had gotten used to his being there, and decided that he wasn’t going to cause them any problems, they all began to become friends. He followed Melissa around everywhere she went. He always slept in her room. It hadn’t taken him long to outgrow the wooden cage. Now he slept on the foot of her bed.

Spring finally began to arrive. They had all begun to wonder if it ever would. The flowers were beginning to poke their heads through the last of the snow, and Rachel and Lou decided that it was time to start working on Sarah’s wedding dress. Rachel was a wonderful seamstress, and she was more than happy to make whatever Lou and Sarah decided on. It took them nearly two weeks, but in the end, the dress was beautiful. White, long sleeved, with a million tiny buttons, it seemed, down the back and lace everywhere. Sarah couldn’t believe the finished product.

Jimmy was over the night that it was finally complete. “I want to see this creation!”

Rachel made him wait in the living room while they got the dress put away. “It’s bad luck to see the dress on your bride before the wedding! You’ll just have to wait!”

She gave him a hug as she left the house headed for the station. Sarah joined him in the living room. “Don’t frown so. You’ll see it soon enough!”

He encircled her in his arms. “Are you shore?” He leaned down to kiss her lips.

“I’m sure,” she smiled.

“Well I think it’s time! I’s waited long enough to make you my wife! How ‘bout we do it this comin’ Saturday?”

Sarah was startled. She had known they had said spring, but she hadn’t really known it would be this soon. The dress was ready…why not? “Okay, if you’re sure it’s still what you want.”

“What do you mean if’n I’m shore. I wouldn’t a asked if’n I weren’t shore! We can go see Teaspoon and see if’n he can do the ceremony Saturday. You know I ain’t much fer goin’ to church. What if’n we git married at the waterfalls?”

Sarah smiled. “That sounds perfect. I can’t wait to be your wife Mr. Hickok.” Kissing his lips, they became lost in one another. Their life together was going to a wonderful one!

They met Teaspoon the next day, and he was thrilled that they asked him to officiate. He found it hard to believe that another of his boys was about to get married. Especially Jimmy. He had never thought that he would see the day!

The rest of the week was a busy one…at least for the ladies. Rachel and Lou were busy making plans. They would have a reception at the station after the ceremony. Since there was usually a dance in town on Saturday night, Teaspoon suggested that they move it out to the station, and make it one big party. Everyone had been assigned things to do, and no one had time to stop and rest. Before they realized it, Saturday morning had arrived.

Melissa was heating water so that Sarah could bathe and start dressing. They both found it hard to believe that today was the day that she was really going to become Mrs. James Butler Hickok. Sarah still found it unbelievable.

As she sat in the tub of steaming water, Melissa handed her the scented soap. “Samoyed and I will stay at the station with Rachel for a few days so that you and Jimmy can have some privacy here. She already told me I could stay.”

“Are you sure? After all, this is your home too.”

“I know, but you and Jimmy deserve some time together. And I won’t mind being that close to Buck,” she smiled.

“I hope you hear from Duell soon. It’s time for the two of you to start thinking about a wedding. Red Bear probably thinks that the two of you are never going to become man and wife.”

“Oh he knows what we’re waiting on. I’m beginning to get worried about Duell though. It’s been nearly three months since I sent the letter. Do you think he got it?”

“I’m sure that he did. If you don’t hear from him soon, we’ll get Teaspoon to wire the marshal of the town they live in and see if we can’t reach him that way. It takes awhile to get here from California. He may be on his way as we speak.”

“I guess that’s true. After all he is a man, and they usually don’t write letters do they?”

“No, they don’t. Don’t give up hope yet.”

“Oh I’m not. Not when I have Buck waiting on me.” They both smiled and Melissa went into the bedroom to start putting the things out that Sarah would need for dressing.

Jimmy had already taken a bath at the bunkhouse, and he was trying to tie his necktie. He’d been standing in front of the mirror for the last fifteen minutes, first brushing his hair, and now tying the tie. He just couldn’t seem to get it to look right. What was wrong with him? Why were his hands shaking so much? He knew that he loved Sarah with all his heart, and he knew that he wanted to marry her. So why were his insides tied in knots?

He stepped over to the bunk that he had used for the last year and a half. He’d already moved his things to Sarah’s the day before. It was going to be strange not sharing the bunkhouse with the other riders anymore. But he knew that he would be happy at the ranch with Sarah.

The door opened, and Teaspoon stepped inside. Jimmy was standing at his bunk, his back to the door. Rachel had all the other riders running around like crazies trying to get things ready for the reception and dance that afternoon. Teaspoon decided that he best go and check on the groom. “Is you alrite son?”

Jimmy turned his way. “I gave up tryin’ to tie this tie! My hands is shakin’ too much!”

Teaspoon grinned. “Ain’t nuthin’ wrong with bein’ nervous on your weddin’ day. I member how nervous I was a’fore I would git married. Mite a done it six times, but it weren’t no easier each time I done it. Come over her and lets me see if’n I kin tie it straight.

It took only seconds for Teaspoon to finish the task. Jimmy couldn’t believe it. He looked up at him, and Teaspoon grinned. “You know Miss Sarah is probably as nervous as you. But know that this here is the rite thing. You’s two belong together.”

Jimmy smiled. “I know it. I guess I jist never thought I’d git married. It’s a scary thought!”

Teaspoon patted him on the back. “Miss Sarah is a beautiful woman. She’ll make yous a good wife and a wonderful mother to all them there children I knows you two will be havin’! Jist stand by her, and she’ll be at your side no matter what!”

Jimmy nodded. “She ain’t got to worry none ‘bout that. I plan to take good care a her.”

Teaspoon pulled the pocket watch out of his vest pocket. He was dressed in his Sunday suit. He always carried a pocket watch when he wore it. “It’s time we was a headin’ to the falls. The townsfolk will be a beatin’ us there if’n we don’t git a move on!”

Jimmy nodded and followed Teaspoon to the door. Before he stepped out, he gave the bunkhouse one last look around. He said good-bye to his past and knew that he was ready to say hello to his future!

Melissa had helped Sarah to dress. She was standing in front of the mirror, and they were putting the finishing touches on her hair. They had scattered daises throughout the long tresses. Melissa stood back and looked at her. She was beautiful. “Jimmy should be very pleased.”

Sarah sighed. “I sure hope so.”

She sounded a little upset, and Melissa gave her a closer look. “Are you okay Sarah?” She’d stepped around to stand in front of her.

“My insides are tied in knots. I keep thinking about Jimmy and all the times that he ran away from me. Do you think he’ll show up today?”

Melissa laughed. “Is that all you’re worried about? Of course he’ll show up. The man loves you Sarah! A few months ago I would have thought maybe he might try running away again, but not now!  He’s ready to settle down and start a future with you. Remember Grandmother Running Doe pushed him in the right direction. Stop all this worry. You don’t want to get to the waterfalls with a frown on your face. This is supposed to be the happiest day of your life.”

A knock sounded on the door, and Melissa gave her a hug. She knew that it would be Buck. He was the one who was to escort them to the falls. “Thanks. I guess I just won’t believe it until I’ve really become Jimmy’s wife. I think I’ve probably loved the man since I first met him, even though it wasn’t a very good first meeting.”

Melissa laughed. “It’s strange how things work out isn’t it? I’m positive that you’ll be happy with Jimmy!”

Sarah gave her a hug back. “I know I will. Now go let Buck in before he thinks I’m the one that has run off.” They laughed as Melissa headed for the door.

Buck had turned away from the door and was standing on the steps looking towards the barn. He was beginning to wonder where the ladies were.

Melissa opened the door and for a moment stood looking at Buck’s back. He was dressed in tight dark pants, a long sleeve shirt and a vest. His hair was pulled back into a ponytail and tied with a piece of leather. He looked really good from behind and Melissa smiled as she thought about things that she shouldn’t be thinking about at the present moment. She cleared her throat, and he turned her way. He looked just as good from the front. Melissa’s face was a little pink as she looked away for a moment. Buck wondered what was wrong.

“You okay?” He stepped close and took her in his arms.

“I’m fine. Just thinking how good you look.” She smiled and he realized where her mind must have been. He blushed a little and cleared his throat.

“We better git Sarah and git headed fer the falls. We could be awfully late if’n we keep on this here subject! You don’t look so bad yourself!”

Melissa smiled. “Well thank you kind sir! I think Sarah is ready. I need to go and check on Samoyed. He’s out in the barn. I didn’t want him following us out to the falls. You go and get her, and I’ll be right back.”

He nodded and entered the house. Melissa headed for the barn to make sure that Samoyed had plenty of water to last him until the evening.

Buck found Sarah standing in her bedroom looking at her reflection in the mirror. She looked a little troubled, and he stepped up beside her. “You know there ain’t no call to worry none. Things is gonna go jist fine today.”

She turned and smiled his way. He could always make her feel better, and she was glad that he was there. “You really think so?”

“I know so. Jimmy is as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rockin’ chairs. But he ain’t ‘bout to run from this. He told me last nite that he was more’n ready to take them vows and love you forever!”

Sarah smiled again. “I hope so. Guess it’s just nervous jitters. Do I look okay?”

Buck stepped back and looked at her from head to toe. She was more then just okay. She was beautiful. “You, my sister, look beautiful.” He hugged her near and she leaned close to kiss him.

“Thank you. I guess I’m ready to go. I don’t want to be late.”

“Sarah…!” Buck was still standing close and holding onto her trim waist. “If’n you and Jimmy ever need anythin’, you know I’ll be there. All you has to do is call.”

She smiled. “I know that. And I thank you for it. I love you Buck!”

He smiled. “I love you too. Now let’s get a goin’ a’fore we’s late!”

Melissa was waiting on them by the buggy. She had a feeling that they had needed a few moments together, and she could tell Sarah was feeling better. She had known that Buck would ease any fears that she might have about Jimmy.

Sarah was still quiet as they headed for the falls. “You okay?” Melissa patted her hand.

“I still feel like I’m dreaming. Please tell me I’m not.”

Buck leaned over and pinched her. “Ouch!” Sarah gave him a startled look. “What was that for?”

“You felt it; you ain’t dreamin’,” he grinned and Sarah laughed out loud.

“I guess I’m not. Thanks, I needed that one!”

As they drew closer to the falls, they saw buggies lined up in the shade. Sarah had wondered just how many of the townsfolk would come to their wedding. Things seemed to be changing in town, and she was glad that it was. Buck and Melissa were being accepted, and she knew that was the way that it should be. Since that was happening, no one should be surprised that she had asked Buck to give her away.  She didn’t have anyone else that she would rather have do it then her blood brother.

“This is where it all started, you know.” Sarah looked towards Buck and Melissa. You remember that afternoon when we all four came here? The first time we made love.”

“Yeah, I member,” Buck smiled. “It’s where Melissa and I met for the first time too.”

“We were just all destined to be together,” Melissa smiled.

Buck had stopped the buggy and had jumped down, coming around to the ladies side. He carefully helped Sarah down, trying not to mess her dress up. Then he reached for Melissa.

There were quite a few of the townsfolk standing in the little glade awaiting their arrival. Melissa carried a bouquet of flowers and walked in front of Buck and Sarah towards Jimmy and Teaspoon.

When the buggy had arrived, Jimmy had looked around everyone to see Sarah. He had stopped breathing as he caught a glimpse of her. She was gorgeous. The dress fit her tightly at the top, showing off her figure. It was low cut, with mountains of lace. It flared at the hips and then fell in layers around her feet. There were white flowers entwined in her hair, which fell past her shoulders.

The entire crowd had turned and watched as they walked towards the falls. They could tell that Sarah was very happy. Her smile matched Jimmy’s. Buck escorted her with pride towards the man that he knew that she belonged with. They heard whispers as they passed several of the ladies. Rachel over heard them too and smiled happily. They were trying to figure out what expensive seamstress had made the beautiful dress that Sarah was wearing. They had never seen anything like it anywhere.

As she neared him, Jimmy’s heart pounded against his ribcage so hard that he was afraid that it was going to fly right out of his mouth. Sarah reached his side, and Buck announced that he was giving her over to Jimmy’s care and protection. Then he stepped over to stand beside Melissa.

Jimmy smiled down at Sarah as he took her arm, and she could have melted into a puddle. This man would always be able to make her feel this way. She’d wanted him for so long...was it really possible that she was about to become his wife?

Teaspoon cleared his throat and his voice rang out loud and clear. “We’s gathered here today to join this here man and this here woman…..”

Sarah listened carefully to the words that Teaspoon read. There was no doubt in her mind that this was the man that she was supposed to spend the rest of her life with.

Jimmy was feeling much the same. The words that Teaspoon was saying were always said at weddings. He hadn’t been to many, but he knew that they were very special and one must live by them. They were taken very seriously, especially when it was your own wedding. He listened carefully and knew that he would love, honor, and cherish Sarah as long as he lived. She didn’t have to worry about any of that.

Buck watched his two closest friends as they stood in front of Teaspoon. He knew that they belonged together and this was how things should be. He briefly thought of Melissa’s grandmother and wondered if her spirit was among them. She’d played a big part in bringing these two together. He smiled. Things were right in the world for once.

Before long, Teaspoon was announcing that they were man and wife. He leaned near and whispered. “You kin kiss the bride Hickok, but don’t take forever in doin’ it! I’s want my kiss too!”

Jimmy laughed as he leaned near and kissed Sarah tenderly. A tear slipped down her cheek, and he kissed it away. She smiled and whispered, “I love you!”

He could have laughed out loud. Seeing the tear had made him wonder if she were already wishing that she hadn’t just married him. “I love you too.” He nearly shouted the words. And they both laughed along with Teaspoon.

They turned and Teaspoon loudly proclaimed, “I present Mr. and Mrs. James Butler Hickok! And I’s must say it’s ‘bout time.” Everyone laughed as they crowded around them.

Teaspoon got his kiss in as did the rest of the riders. Before Sarah realized what was happening, they were leaving the falls and headed back to the station where Rachel and Lou had food everywhere for a reception. Sarah had no idea when the two of them had time to fix everything. It was amazing. She just stood looking at everything. Rachel hugged her and she smiled.

“Is it to your liking?”

Sarah laughed. “I can’t believe what all you’ve done. Thank you!”

Rachel hugged her again. “It was a joy getting everything together. Don’t you worry none. You and Jimmy just have a good time. This is your party!”

Everyone ate their fill, and then Jimmy and Sarah started off the dancing. It was a very slow romantic sounding tune, and Jimmy took his new bride in his arms, and held her close. She fit so well, and his heart swelled with pride as he looked down into her eyes and realized once again that this lady was all his!”

Other couples began to join in the dancing, Buck and Melissa included. He leaned down and kissed her lips. “They shore look happy don’t they?”

Melissa smiled. “They do. I’m so glad it all worked out.”

“Before long we’ll be doin’ this.”

She smiled. “I hope so. I’m beginning to wonder if I’m going to hear from Duell. It’s been a long time since I wrote that letter to him.”

“Don’t worry none. We can have Teaspoon track him down if’n we need to. I wouldn’t be surprised he doesn’t come ridin’ in here in a few days ready to see us git married!”

“I sure hope so.”

All the riders and Teaspoon took turns dancing with the bride. Sarah’s feet were beginning to hurt as darkness began to fall. Teaspoon had hung lanterns around in the trees to light the area, and the dancing continued way into the evening. Buck was dancing with Sarah, and she smiled up at him.

“It’s about time this party came to an end. My feet are killing me. I don’t remember dancing this much at the Saturday night dances before.”

Buck laughed. “Weddin’s seem to be a big occasion round here! Yous probably have to run these here people off.”

“I hope not! Surely they understand that the bride and groom need some time to themselves.”

“Why? Yous two done consummated this here relationship.” Buck grinned as Sarah’s face turned red.

“Well you don’t have to tell everyone here Buck Cross,” she laughed.

“Sarah, I shore am happy fer the two a you!”

She smiled. “I know. This is right, isn’t it Buck? I look at Jimmy and I still can’t believe that he’s finally mine! I never thought it would happen. I love him so much!”

“That’s how it’s ‘sposed to be!”

“That’s how you and Melissa will be before long.”

“I know it. She’s worried ‘bout her brother.”

“I know. We talked about him this morning. He’ll be here in a few days. I can feel it. It just takes time to get here from California. But I know she’s anxious to become your bride.” Buck blushed slightly. “And I plan to let it be known that you two have already consummated your relationship too!”

He laughed. “Alrite, we’s even now! Good thing there’s music playin’ or everyone would’a heard us!”

She laughed and gave him a hug. “It’s time the two of you were happy also. Life is too short not to live it with the person you love the most.” She glanced over and saw Melissa standing on the sidelines talking to Teaspoon. “Why don’t you go dance with her? I need to go find my husband.”

Buck turned her loose and started for Melissa. Sarah looked around for Jimmy and headed in his direction. He was standing near the punch bowl, wondering when all these people were going to go home. He was ready to spend some time with his new wife. Plus his tie was beginning to bug him. He tugged at it once again and finally untied it. Sarah slipped up beside him and looped her arms through his. “That tie bothering you?”

“I’ll say. I think it’s time we’s sent these here folks home, don’t you Mrs. Hickok?”

Sarah smiled. “My sentiments exactly, Mr. Hickok!”

They headed for Teaspoon, and he could tell by looking at them that they were ready to call it an evening. He signaled for the musicians to finish the song and to pack it up. Once the music had ended, he spoke loud enough for everyone to understand him.

“I think these here newlyweds would like some time ‘lone...though I cain’t
‘magine why.” Everyone laughed. “Boys, it’s time!”

With those words, the riders converged on Jimmy and Sarah. They bodily picked them up and placed them in the buckboard on top of a blanket. Cody jumped into the seat and slapped the reins on the horses’ backs. They headed out towards Sarah’s ranch.

All the way the riders followed the buckboard. There was a lot of laughing and shooting of guns as they rode along. Anyone could tell that it was a festive occasion. Sarah laughed as she snuggled close to Jimmy, trying to tune out what the others were saying loudly around them. She knew that she would soon have this man all to herself, but they didn’t have to talk about it! It was beginning to embarrass her.

Reaching the house, they helped them from the buckboard and carried them towards the door, depositing them on the porch. Someone had decorated the porch with flowers after they had left for the ceremony, and someone had been inside and lit the oil lamps for them. They gave Jimmy the chance to carry his new bride across the threshold, then as soon as they were inside the riders were picking them up and carrying them through the living room, following a trail of flower petals to their bedroom. It had also been decorated with flowers and red paper hearts. The bed had been turned down and a bottle of wine was sitting beside the bed with two glasses waiting to be shared by only them. Teaspoon had followed the riders into the house, and he stood at the doorway while the others deposited Jimmy and Sarah in the middle of the bed, shouting and laughing as they did so.

“Now yous two newlyweds have a nice nite. If’n you needs any help on how anythin’ is done, I’s be at the office fer awhile.” He grinned as he watched both of them turn red. “Come on boys. It’s time we left ‘em alone.” He tipped his hat in Sarah’s direction and backed out of the room.

Melissa and Buck had also followed along. Melissa headed to the barn to get Samoyed. He was happy to see her. Jumping around her, he quickly licked her hands and face as she knelt down to give him a hug. “Come on fellow. We’re going to visit the station for a few days.” He followed her out where he greeted Buck and raced around to say hello to the other riders. It didn’t take long before they were on their way back to help Rachel clean up from the reception.

Sarah looked towards Jimmy and laughed at the expression on his face. Things had happened so fast, he hadn’t known what to think. But finally here he was alone with his new bride. And it had only taken all day to do it!

“You okay?”

He grinned. “More then okay.” He pushed her back onto the bed and started kissing her. “I’ve been waiting all afternoon to do that without someone watchin’ me!”

“You’ll have plenty of time to kiss me...and do whatever else your heart desires for the next few days. I’m yours and yours alone!”

Jimmy growled low at her. “Shore you can handle it?”

“I can’t wait to handle it.” She started kissing him back, and they were soon lost in one another, their loving going far into the night.

Melissa spent nearly a week at the station. She enjoyed her time with all the riders, and was soon doing her share of chores, against Rachel’s wishes. She and Samoyed fit in perfectly, and Buck loved having her so close. He was hard pressed not to sneak in her window every night and spend it loving her. Or at least when he did, he would slip back out to the bunkhouse before anyone was up. That way they didn’t know that he had been there.

The day that Melissa returned to the ranch was the day that Duell arrived. She had just finished doing laundry and was hanging the clothes out to dry when she noticed that someone was on the rise above the ranch. As they drew nearer, she could tell that it was a wagon loaded with belongings. It looked as if there was a woman and a small child on the wagon and a man followed close on a horse. As they drew nearer, Melissa realized that it was Duell!

Quickly she left the clothes line and started running up the hill, yelling for Sarah as she ran. Samoyed quickly followed her yelping all the way. Sarah came flying out of the house and stopped on the porch. Shielding her eyes from the sun, she tried to see who was coming. Suddenly she threw down the towel she was holding, and she was running up the hill as well.

Duell swung down from his horse as Melissa reached him, throwing herself into his arms. In seconds, Sarah had reached them and was doing the same thing. Nora sat on the wagon seat watching the show in front of her. She knew that one of these ladies was her husband’s sister, but she wasn’t sure about the other one. He had mentioned Sarah Brooks, and she had wondered as she listened to him speak of her, just what had gone on between them. Now she really wondered as she watched them greeting one another!

Duell hugged and kissed both ladies. It was so good to see them both. It had taken so long to get back that he had begun to wonder if they were ever going to arrive. But traveling with a wagonload of belongings and his small son Ethan, had made them move slower than usual.

“Duell, it’s so good to see you. I was so worried! What took you so long to get here? The least you could have done was write me and let me know you were coming,” Melissa scolded him, and Sarah stood by listening.

“I’m sorry Melissa. It just took longer to get here then we planned.”

So the auburn haired lady was Melissa. Nora watched as she hugged Duell again.

“I’m glad you’re finally here.” Then she was smiling Nora’s way. “I’m assuming this is Nora?”

Duell smiled softly at her. “Yes, this is Nora and Ethan.” Melissa stepped closer to the wagon and extended her hand.

“It’s good to finally meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you.”

Nora couldn’t help but smile. Melissa was so bubbly, she just drew you right in. “I hope it was all good!”

“Of course it was! Don’t worry!”

Ethan had been squirming around in the wagon seat since they had arrived watching Samoyed. Every time he moved, Ethan would move to try and see him better. Melissa smiled. “You like Samoyed?”

“Doggie?” His soft voice sounded excited as he leaned over Nora for a better look, pointing to Samoyed.

“No, he’s a wolf.” Melissa reached up into the wagon, and after a moment of hesitation, Ethan came to her. “Come on down here and let Auntie Melissa introduce you two.” Melissa got down on her knees beside Samoyed, and he quickly licked Ethan in the face.

He turned throwing his arms around Melissa’s neck, and then just as quickly giggled as he licked him once more. “He won’t hurt you. This is Samoyed.” He timidly reached out and patted him on the head. Nora and Duell looked on with smiles on their faces. It looked as if Ethan would fit right in here. Melissa gave Ethan a hug and stood back up with him in her arms. He was adorable and looked a lot like Duell. One could tell who had fathered him. Melissa noticed that Sarah was still standing to her right. She had temporarily forgotten about her. “Oh, I’m sorry. Nora, this is my best friend Sarah.”

Nora smiled her way. She seemed friendly enough as she extended her hand, but she still had a strange feeling about her. “Nice to meet you.”

Sarah smiled. “Same here. I’m sure the two of you are tired after your journey. Come on down to the house. From the looks of things you’ve come to stay. We’ve got plenty of room. I’m glad to see you are planning to put down roots here.”

Duell smiled at her, and for a moment, Sarah’s heart pounded overtime in her chest. He would always be a good looking man who could certainly turn a girl’s head.

“Well, after all, you did offer me a partnership in this ranch! I hope that offer still stands.”

“Of course it does! Come on down to the house. We’ve got an extra bedroom, and it’s yours for as long as you need it.”

So they started down the hill, Duell leading his horse and walking between Melissa and Sarah. Melissa was carrying Ethan and Nora was driving the wagon.

Jimmy had been in town and arrived not too long after they had reached the house. Sarah was busily fixing them something cold to drink, and Melissa was still playing with her nephew when he walked in. He stopped short when he saw Duell standing in the kitchen with Sarah. All his jealous feelings came roaring to the surface. He’d taken off his hat, and stood there turning it around and around in his hands. Sarah looked up and spotted him, and quickly made her way over to his side with a big smile on her face.

Duell had been equally surprised to see Jimmy standing there. He hadn’t even knocked. He’d just walked right in. What was going on here? Had they worked it all out between them? He watched Sarah go over and slip an arm through Jimmy’s kissing him quickly on the mouth. It looked as if they had gotten it straight. How did he feel about that? He told himself sternly that it didn’t matter any more. He’d made his decision, and he’d known that she and Jimmy belonged together. Hadn’t he tried to tell Jimmy that before he left? Obviously it had worked.

“Jimmy, come in the kitchen. There is someone I want you to meet.” Sarah led him through the living room, where Jimmy spotted a little boy sitting on Melissa’s lap. Whose child was that? He looked back over his shoulder as the little boy smiled his way. Then he turned his gaze back to the kitchen. A woman was standing by the table, a slight smile on her face. She was dark headed, about Duell’s height, and slender in form. He was confused.

Nora looked at the man that Sarah was bringing into the kitchen. Who was this person? She quickly realized that he was very good looking…slender in build, almost Duell’s height, with long sandy blond hair. He wore two pistols strapped low around his waist. She wondered if he and Duell had butted heads before. He kept glancing at Duell and Duell at him. She could tell that there was some friction between them.

“Nora, I’d like for you to meet my husband, Jimmy Hickok. Jimmy this is Nora...” She stopped. She had no idea what Nora’s last name was. All she’d ever heard was Nora. She glanced at Duell for help.

“It’s McCall. Nora McCall. This is my wife!”

Both Jimmy and Nora looked at one another and both uttered at the same time,

“Wife?”

“Husband?”

Then they were laughing. Both were very relieved. Nora extended her hand as did Jimmy. He was glad to learn that Duell was married. So that must be his son in the living room with Melissa. Nora was thinking on the same lines. Duell hadn’t mentioned that Sarah was married. This sort of put a new light on things.

Duell was looking at Jimmy and Sarah with his mouth hanging open. “Married?” He sounded so surprised.

Sarah looked at Duell with a big smile on her face. “We’ve been married a week! If you’d arrived sooner, you could have been here for the wedding!”

Melissa had come into the kitchen carrying Ethan. “It was beautiful…dancing and a lot of celebrating. You really missed it!”

Duell was suddenly stepping close and hugging first Sarah and then Jimmy. “I’m so happy for the two of you!”

Sarah smiled. “And I’m happy for you. Obviously things worked out well for you and Nora after you got back to California.” Sarah stepped over and gave Nora a hug. “You’ve got a good man here!”

Nora smiled. “I know I have. I’ve loved him a long time.”

Sarah wasn’t sure whose benefit she had said that for. She had a feeling it was hers. She could feel a little hesitation on Nora’s part towards her. Was she jealous?

Melissa was stepping between everyone and hugging Duell and Nora. Duell took his son from her and gave him a hug. “I’m so happy for the two of you. I can finally call you sister.” She hugged Nora again.

“Well, we hear you are about to tie the knot! Where is that husband to be of yours?” Duell looked towards his sister. “I expected to see him here!”

“He had a run yesterday. He’ll be back either tonight or in the morning. You’ll see him then. Now that you’ve arrived, we can get started on wedding plans. You were all we’ve been waiting on.” Melissa hugged her brother again, and he laughed.

“Well, congratulations sis! I hope it’s what you want!”

She beamed. “You know it is! More than anything!”

So they all settled in. Jimmy helped Duell unload the things that they would need from the wagon, and they placed the rest in the barn until they could get a house built. Sarah had told him that she had offered Duell a partnership in the ranch, and Jimmy didn’t seem to have a problem with it. After all, it had been made before they had gotten back together. And since Duell was married with a family, he thought he just might be able to put his jealous feelings to rest. Nora seemed like a lovely woman, and she seemed to have a strong hold on Duell. He could tell by watching the two of them together that they cared deeply for one another!

The weeks began to fly by. Buck and Melissa were making plans for the wedding. Duell and Nora seemed to have gotten settled. Sarah had deeded them a spot of land, and they were starting to work on their house. The riders and Teaspoon were always around helping them on it. When Sarah had made the deed out for Duell, she had also made one out for Buck and Melissa. It was going to be her wedding gift to them. It would be right over the rise from her and Jimmy. The lines were quickly being strung for the telegraph in the cities that weren’t yet connected, and the train tracks were being laid all across the territories. The Pony Express would soon be a thing of the past. That would leave Jimmy and Buck as well as the other riders without a job. She’d already talked with Jimmy about helping run the ranch, and she was pretty positive that Buck would be equally interested. With the three men there to help her run the place, the Brooks Ranch could really prosper and be the biggest horse ranch in the area. Sarah smiled as he placed the deed in an envelope and put it away for safe keeping. The future was really looking bright for them all.

Nora had been watching Duell and Sarah together. She still had problems with the fact that they seemed so close to one another. Duell hadn’t told her what had gone on between him and Sarah, but she had a feeling that it had been very serious. She knew that if she were going to live here on this ranch, as a part of it, she had to get all these feelings out in the open. So finally, she took the bull by the horns and went in search of Sarah. She had to get to the bottom of things

Sarah was under one of the shade trees, brushing down one of the horses that she had been working. It was after lunch. Jimmy and Duell had ridden into town to pick up supplies, and Melissa was putting Ethan down for a nap. Melissa was becoming a big help with her nephew. Duell was forever teasing her about getting in practice for when had her own babies.

Sarah saw Nora coming her way, and she had a feeling that they were about to have a showdown. Actually she had been expecting it for some time. She had known that Nora had some hard feelings towards her. She tried to appear calm as she smiled her way. “Melissa get Ethan down for his nap?”

“She was working on it. She’s good with him.”

“Yes, she is. As Duell said, it won’t be long before she has one of her own. I’m so glad that she and Buck will be getting married soon.”

“She seems excited about it.” Nora fell silent, as she looked out over the mountains. “Sarah, I need to ask you something.”

Well here it comes. She looked her way over the back of the horse and smiled. “Sure. What’s on your mind?”

Nora hesitated for a moment, and then threw down the blade of grass that she’d been twisting in her fingers. Taking a deep breath, her words tumbled out all in one breath. “I’ve got to know. Did you and Duell have an affair while he was here last winter?”

Sarah had started brushing down the horse again, but stopped as she looked her way. “Why do you ask?”

“There is just a strange feeling there, about the two of you. I can tell when you are around one another that there are feelings there.”

“These feelings bother you? What has Duell told you?”

Nora looked away again. “He hasn’t told me anything really. Just that the two of you were friends and that I have nothing to worry about.”

“He’s telling you the truth, you know.”

“I’m sure that he is, especially since you offered him a partnership in the ranch. But we weren’t married then, and I wonder if you offered it to him so that he might come back here and marry you!”

Well, Sarah wasn’t surprised that she had asked that. Perhaps she had been thinking that when she’d made the offer. But she had known that Duell and Nora belonged together. She really wanted them to live here. To be happy. “But Nora, I’m married to Jimmy.”

“True. But while he was here, you weren’t.”

“Okay. You’re right. I wasn’t. In fact, I wasn’t even on speaking terms with Jimmy at the time. Duell helped me through a lot of bad times. And I guess I helped him through some tough times as well. He was trying to make a decision about you. And obviously, you already know what the decision was. He went back to California, and he married you. And I’ve married Jimmy whom I love very much, Nora. I’ve loved him since I first met him. But I didn’t think we would ever get back together.”

“But did you and Duell have an affair? Are my suspicions correct?”

“You just aren’t going to let it lie are you?”

“Sarah, I can’t! I need to know. It’s going to drive me crazy if I don’t find out!”

Sarah sighed. She didn’t know if she should tell her the truth or not. If she told the truth, would it cause problems between Nora and Duell? If she didn’t tell the truth would it continue to cause problems between her and Nora? She was between a rock and a hard place here! She looked up at Nora. She had a serious expression on her face. “Nora what do you plan to gain by finding out the answer to this question? Duell and I are friends. Nothing more. I love my husband very much, and I know that he loves me. If it did or didn’t happen before, it’s not going to happen now!”

“I know that Sarah, I trust Duell. I just need to know the answer so that I can put all these questions in my head to rest. I don’t expect to gain anything by it. If you don’t tell me, I am going to always wonder every time that the two of you are together. The feelings are there between the two of you. You can’t tell me they aren’t!”

Sarah sighed. “All right Nora. I care a great deal for Duell. He will always be my friend, and yes, I love him. I could have loved him forever. I could have spent the rest of my life with him. And I was tempted. But I loved Jimmy, and he loved you. He wasn’t complete without you, just like I wasn’t complete without Jimmy. You’ll have to live with the fact that we’re close, because we always will be. And if you two plan to live here on my ranch and help me run it, you are going to have to put your jealous feelings to rest. It won’t work if you don’t. But yes, Duell and I had an affair while he was here during the winter. But it’s over. I won’t step between the two of you. I’m the one who made him realize that he needed you in his life. We spent many an hour talking about it. I knew that he would never be happy if he didn’t go back to California and try to make a life with you and his son. Ethan needed him, so did you.”

Nora had been quiet during Sarah’s speech. Now that she knew, she didn’t know how she felt about it. She felt a tear slip down her cheek, and Sarah came around the horse that she had stopped brushing a long time ago. “Please Nora, don’t give Duell a hard time about this. He’s happy with you and Ethan. And I’m totally happy with Jimmy. Just try and understand that we gave one another what we needed, when we needed it. But we’re just friends now.”

Nora dashed the tears from her face. “Thanks for telling me Sarah. I appreciate your being honest with me.”

She just sort of stood there, and Sarah on impulse, reached out to give her a hug. “I want to be your friend too Nora...if you’ll let me.”

Smiling weakly, Nora nodded. “I think that can be arranged. Thank you.” At that she turned and walked back towards the house. Sarah watched her go, wondering if she should have given her the answer that she had come for.

Jimmy had been watching Sarah and Duell together for several days. As far as he knew, they hadn’t been alone together, and nothing had happened between them. And he was trying awfully hard to put the jealous feelings behind him, but it wasn’t that easy. He had also observed Nora watching the two of them together. He knew that she was feeling much the same as he was about it.

Buck had ridden out to the ranch to see Melissa. Jimmy was standing at the corral, watching the horses. Buck rode over to where he was and jumped from the saddle. “You okay?”

Jimmy looked his way. “Yeah. Jist wrestlin’ with some problems.”

“Somethin’ I kin help you with?”

He sighed. “I ain’t shore. Ain’t shore really what the problem is!”

“Then how’s you know you got a problem?”

Jimmy laughed. “Guess I ain’t really. I think I jist mite be makin’ it up in my head!”

“Oh? Wanna talk ‘bout it?”

“No…oh, I ain’t shore!”

Buck laughed. “You shore ‘bout anythin’?”

“Yeah, that I love Sarah a hell of a lot!”

“Well, I already knowed that!”

“I think that’s why I have these jealous feelin’s!”

“Jealous? A Duell, rite?”

“Yeah. I thought I could out these here feelin’s to rest since he’d come ridin’ in here with a wife and son. But ever time I see them together, it bothers me.”

“Jimmy, does it bother you when Sarah and I are together?”

He looked his way and thought about it. It had never bothered him that she and Buck were close. “No, I guess not.”

“Well it’s the same ‘tween Sarah and Duell as it is ‘tween us. They’s friends. It ain’t a gonna go no further than that. You gonna have to git used to his bein’ here. He’s gonna be runnin’ this here ranch right long side you.”

“I know that. But I know there was somthin’ real serious ‘tween them two!”

“Maybe there was. But she’s married to you, and he’s married to Nora! If’n it were ‘sposed to be ‘tween ‘em, these other two things wouldn’t a happened! Member what Grandmother Running Doe told you?”

Jimmy was quiet as he thought about it again. She had said they were supposed to be together. And if anyone knew it, a spirit should! “Guess you’re rite. I jist ain’t shore what to do bout these here feelin’s!”

“Don’t worry so much ‘bout it. You’ll soon git used to his bein’ round. And they’s gonna be close friends forever…jist like Sarah and me!”

“Guess you’re rite. It jist ain’t easy. It wouldn’t be fer you neither if’n you was in my shoes.”

“Probably not. But jist you member, Sarah loves you. Or she wouldn’t a married you!”

Jimmy nodded and smiled as he saw Sarah coming out of the house carrying a laundry basket. “I know it. I jist have to do better!”

Buck patted him on the back and started towards the house to see Melissa. Jimmy headed for the clothes line and Sarah.

Duell had been watching Nora for the last hour. She wasn’t acting right. What was her problem? Moving over to stand behind her, he slipped his arms around her waist. “What’s wrong lady? You ain’t happy all of a sudden. Don’t you like it here?”

She turned in his arms. “I do. I’m just having a problem with the feelings that I see between you and Sarah!”

Duell gave her a startled look. “Feelings? What feelings are you talkin’ ‘bout?”

“Duell, I know they’re there. Don’t deny them.”

“I won’t deny them Nora. I care a great deal for her. In fact, I love her. But it ain’t the kind a love I feel fer you! You’ve got to understand that.”

“I’m trying. I really am. Sarah and I had a talk yesterday. She finally admitted that you had an affair while you were here!”

Duell closed his eyes and pulled Nora a little closer. Why would Sarah have told her that?

“I’m sorry Nora. It just happened between us. We both needed something that the other could give at the time. I was trying to make a decision about us, and she was trying to learn to live without Jimmy! I could say that I was sorry every day for the rest of my life, but it wouldn’t never change what happened. But it’s over Nora. I love you with all my heart. Sarah loves Jimmy. I knew that when we were together. She would have never loved me like she loved him. She’s with the person that she is supposed to be with and so am I! But Sarah and I will always be friends. I do hope you can learn to live with that. Especially since we are going to live here and help her with the ranch. I want to do this. I love the horses. You know I’ve always been good with them. Plus I can be close to Melissa here. We’ve never been together that much. Our lives have been separated too much. Life is too short to not spend it with the ones you love! And for me that’s you, Ethan, and my sister! Please understand.”

She sniffed as a tear fell down her face. Duell leaned near and kissed it away. “I love you Duell, with all my heart!”

“I love you too lady! And it ain’t gonna change. Please believe that!”

She nodded and he stood holding her until Ethan cried, waking from his nap. He watched as she walked to his bed in the corner and picked him up. They were his whole world. He would always love Sarah, but not like he loved this woman and his son!

Buck and Melissa had been talking about their wedding. The date was set for the following Saturday. Buck would ride to the village the next afternoon and let Red Bear know Teaspoon was asked to officiate, both knowing that Melissa would want to be married by the white man’s law as well as the Indian law. One of the elders of the village would be asked to bless their marriage vows as well. Buck would take care of that when he saw Red Bear.

Sarah was sitting in the living room listening to them talk about the ceremony. A plan began to formulate in her mind. “Buck, how much trouble would it be for the elder of your village to bless my marriage to Jimmy after your ceremony?”

He looked her way and smiled. “If’n that is what you want, I shore kin arrange it.”

“I haven’t spoken to Jimmy about it, but since my beliefs are similar to yours, I would be honored if they would bless our vows as well. But I don’t want to take away from your ceremony. I know that it is very beautiful and special. I would want ours to be later, after the two of you had taken your vows.”

“Ain’t no problem. I’ll speak with Red Bear ‘bout it tomorrow.”

Sarah smiled. Getting up, she headed out to the barn to find Jimmy. She wanted to run her idea past him. Hopefully he would understand and agree.

Jimmy was working one of the horses in the corral when he sensed someone watching him. Turning, he saw Sarah sitting on the top if the fence.

“Hey, ain’t you learned it ain’t wise to sneak up on someone like that?”

Sarah laughed. “You were so into it with Thunder Heart, I didn’t think you heard me. Sorry!”

He let go of Thunder Heart’s reins and walked over to where she sat. Pulling off his gloves, he rubbed her thighs and smiled up at her. “Want to slip into the hayloft for awhile?”

“Umm, that sounds wonderful.” She leaned down and kissed his lips, lingering for a moment in his arms. “I have something that I need to ask you.”

“Shore, what is it?” He hopped up to sit beside her on the fence. “You know I can’t say no to anythin’ you ask me!”

She laughed. “That’s good to know!”

“Maybe I shouldn’t a told ya that!”

“I promise not to ask something to farfetched. But I do want to ask something that means a lot to me. I love you dearly Jimmy. I think you know that. I also think you know that some of my beliefs and Buck’s are the same.” He nodded. “Well, Melissa and Buck are going to get married next Saturday at the village. Teaspoon and one of the elders are going to officiate. Would you have a problem with the elder of the village blessing our marriage vows? I mean, it would only mean that I cared enough to have the spirits that walk the spirit path say a blessing for us.”

“Like Grandmother Running Doe?” Jimmy’s face held a serious expression.

Sarah smiled. “So you do know about her.”

“Yeah, I do. She’s a special lady.”

“Yes, she is. And yes, she is one of the ones that I’ll be calling upon that day.”

“If’n it’s what you want, then its fine by me. I love you very much you know!”

“I know. Please don’t ever doubt my love for you, Jimmy. I know you still have problems with Duell being here and all. Please try and understand that.” She reached up and caressed his cheek.

“I will. Don’t worry none.” He kissed her softly and jumped down from the fence. Reaching for her he slung her across his shoulder and headed for the barn.

“Jimmy, where are you taking me?”

“The hayloft woman! Don’t you ‘member anythin’?”

Sarah laughed and hung on as he headed for the loft. She wasn’t about to complain.

Duell and Nora’s house was beginning to take shape. They should be able to move in within the week. He had been working on it for several hours when he saw Sarah riding his way. He looked towards the sun. It was nearly noon. She must be bringing him some lunch. He briefly wondered why Nora hadn’t brought it, but pushed the thought aside. He hadn’t had a chance to talk to Sarah alone since they had arrived. He met her horse as she rode up.

“Hi pretty lady!”

“Hi, handsome! Want some lunch?”

“I’d love some. Hope you brought something cold to drink with it.”

“Sure did.” She brought the food and lemonade out of the saddle bags, and they headed to a shady spot to sit down. Duell ate, while she just sat enjoying the peacefulness of the area. There was a stream running behind the house that he was building, and she knew that it would be beautiful out here. “Nora is gonna love it here, you know?”

“I hope so.” He stopped eating and looked her way. “Sarah she told me that you confessed to her the other day about us!”

Sarah looked down at the ground. “I’m sorry Duell. I didn’t know what to tell her. I tried not to, but she wouldn’t leave it alone. There wasn’t any way around it.”

“It’s okay. I think now that she knows, she’ll be able to live with it better. At least now she knows the truth. I just hope that she can accept the fact that you and I will always be friends. And that any time that you or Jimmy need me, all you have to do is ask.”

Sarah smiled. “I appreciate that Duell. The same goes for me and Jimmy.”

“I know. Sarah, are you happy with Jimmy?”

She smiled. “Are you happy with Nora?”

He laughed. “Loaded questions aren’t they?”

She nodded. “They are. But the answers are as well.”

“Yes, I’m happy with Nora. You were right. I needed to go back to her. She and Ethan needed me. I realized that I loved her very much. And though there was a chance that you and I could be together, it would never be right. I had to marry her. She makes my life complete.”

Sarah smiled. “I feel the same about Jimmy. I love him more than anything Duell. I have very deep feelings for you. I’ll always love you, but it isn’t the same that I feel for Jimmy.”

He had finished eating and he picked up the leftovers and placed them to the side. Moving closer to her, he reached out and caressed her cheek. “I’ll always love you Sarah Hickok! I know that it isn’t the same as what I feel for Nora, but it’s very special. And I will never forget what you did for me, or the time we spent together!”

“I feel the same Duell.” Slowly, his head descended to hers and his mouth closed over her own. The kiss was sweet, and her heart leapt in her chest. She would always remember the time that they had spent together. Perhaps in another time and place they would have been together. He pulled away from her and smiled.

“Guess I shouldn’t have done that, but I couldn’t help myself. It was one for old time’s sake!”

She smiled. “It’s okay Duell. Your kisses will always be special to me. But we both know that we can’t share them any more.”

“Yeah, I know.” She got up and headed back to Thunder Heart.

“I’ll see you tonight at supper.”

He smiled as she turned the horse around and headed back towards the ranch. They had just said good-bye to the past.

The following Saturday dawned clear and warm. The wedding ceremony was to be late that afternoon at Red Bear’s village. All the riders, Rachel, Duell, Nora, Ethan, and Sarah were going to be there. Buck and Melissa had already gone to the village the day before. Autumn Wind and Morning Flower were in charge of getting Melissa ready for the ceremony. Buck hadn’t seen her since the night before. He’d slept in the teepee alone, knowing that he wouldn’t see Melissa until the moment the ceremony began.

Near noon, Morning Flower and Autumn Wind took Melissa to a scheduled spot down the river where they washed her with scented soaps and began to groom her for her wedding. Samoyed had come along, and he watched as they bathed her. He wasn’t sure what was happening, but he stayed close just in case she should need him. Melissa smiled as she watched him from the river.

She let her mind drift as her sister-n-laws bathed her. Soon she would be Buck’s wife. She felt like this was what she had lived her entire life for. She loved him very much and knew that she couldn’t live without him. She looked forward to starting her life with him.

Buck had spent the morning with Red Bear. Now he was down at the river bathing. He could hear Morning Flower and Autumn Wind talking to Melissa as they readied her for the ceremony that evening. He was tempted to move to the other side of the oak grove where he could see them, but knew it was against customs that they see each other before the ceremony…much like the customs of the white man. It was only a few hours away before they were joined, but it would seem like an eternity!

Buck smiled as he thought of all the times they had bathed together at the river. Melissa was so beautiful and before the day was over she would be truly his. Mrs. Buck Cross! He liked the sound of that. He knew that his heart belonged to her and only her. It carried her fingerprints. He belonged to her as well.

He drew his thoughts from Melissa and thought of what he and Red Bear had discussed earlier. He was a little uneasy about the strangers coming to the village for the ceremony. Buck had assured him that no one would cause any problems. The whites coming were good people, and they respected what the Indian stood for.

He finished his bath and stepped onto the bank to redress. He needed to meet with the elder about the ceremony for Jimmy and Sarah. He was glad that his sister had wanted to have the vows that she and Jimmy had taken to be blessed by his people. That just proved to him that her spirit was much like his. It also would prove to Red Bear that she as well as her husband could be trusted.

Sarah was running around trying to get everything together to leave for the Indian village. She hoped that she hadn’t forgotten anything. Was it Melissa getting married…or herself? She was excited about their part of the ceremony and felt as if she were being married all over again.

Jimmy was out in the barn saddling his horse and Sarah’s. She was taking several gifts to Red Bear for the kindness that he was showing, and he needed to clean out the saddle bags so there would be plenty of room.

As he slipped his hand into one side, he pulled a folded paper out. He wondered what it was, as he unfolded it. Then it dawned on him. This was Duell’s WANTED poster that he had gotten from Teaspoon’s office not long after he had met Duell. He hadn’t been sure then what he had wanted with it. And still wasn’t really, unless in the back of his mind, he had known that he would one day see his name plastered on the walls of Marshall’s offices all over the west if he didn’t do something to change his ways. Perhaps in a way it had helped him change. Or at least Duell had.

He’d been so lost in thought that he hadn’t heard Duell come in. Stepping closer, he realized that Jimmy was looking at his WANTED poster. It always gave him a funny feeling to see one of them still around.

“You still wondering if my pardon is fer real?”

Duell’s voice made Jimmy jump. He quickly reached for his gun, and then realized that it was Duell. His heart hammered against his ribs. He wished that people would stop sneaking up on him.

“No, jist tryin’ to ‘member why it were I wanted this here poster.”

“It was the first time I was here. I imagine you weren’t ready to believe anythin’ I had to say. Guess you just wanted to keep it close in case I wasn’t tellin’ the truth about the pardon.” Duell smiled letting Jimmy know that he didn’t have any hard feelings.

Jimmy looked back at the poster. “No, I think I kept it cause it was goin’ to show me somethin’!”

“Did it?”

“Not so much as this here person who’s picture is on it! The day you drew on me and made me ride outta town to talk,  I was madder than a rattlesnake. But it were you that made me start thinkin’ ‘bout Sarah and how wrong I mite be ‘bout her. I owe’s you a lot!”

“I’m just glad I was able to make you start thinkin’. I knew she loved you. Knew there weren’t ever gonna be a chance fer me to own her heart. It already belonged to you Hickok! Guess I envied you that! But she made me see that it was Nora that I belonged with. She and Ethan needed me, and I weren’t complete without them in my life. I want you to know, you ain’t gots nuthin’ to worry ‘bout with her and me. This here partnership thing, I don’t want you to have no hard feelin’s ‘bout it.”

“I ain’t. I think it’s gonna work out. It was my hardheadedness that caused all the problems. I want us to start fresh here Duell. I knows I ain’t got no need fer this any more.” At that point he ripped the wanted posted into pieces. “You made me realize that life’s too short to be miserable, and I’d be miserable without Sarah! I love her more ‘n life itself Duell! I owe you fer helpin’ me see that.” He stuck out his hand, and hesitating only a second, Duell clasped it with his own.

“I’m glad I was able to help. Sarah deserves happiness and you are what makes her happy. She’s a very special, beautiful woman. Don’t ever hurt her Hickok!”

Jimmy smiled. “Don’t worry none. I ain’t ‘bout to do that. She tell you we was gonna be blessed at the village by the elder that‘s doin’ Buck ‘n Melissa’s weddin’?”

“Yeah, she did. I think that makes her love you that much more, cause you understand the part of her that shares Buck’s Indian beliefs. I don’t think the two of you will ever have any problems.”

Jimmy smiled. “I hope not. If’n you gonna stick ‘round, maybe you can keep me straight! I think Teaspoon gave up on that part a it!”

Duell laughed. “Together, we’ll do all right Hickok! I’m sure Sarah and Nora will think it’s them that keeps us straight!”

“Don’t all women?”

Sarah had slipped into the barn and stood looking at the two men laughing. “Don’t all women what Jimmy?”

Jimmy wheeled around and quickly looked towards his wife. “Nuthin’. We was jist talkin’ ‘bout how much we loves you and Nora!”

Sarah’s arms were crossed over her breasts. “I bet you were! But right now I don’t have time to dwell on it. So you get to slide this time! We need to be heading to the village. The ceremony starts in an hour.”

Jimmy and Duell quickly started getting things together. They couldn’t be late, Melissa would never forgive them.

Melissa was in Red Bear’s teepee. She had been dressed for nearly an hour, and she was beginning to get restless. She wasn’t allowed to leave the teepee until it was time for the ceremony. Samoyed sat at her feet when she stopped pacing and walked with her as she went from one side of the teepee to the other. Red Bear watched her, smiling to himself. He knew that she was anxious for the ceremony to begin. He knew that she was also nervous. He had seen the same in Running Buck’s eyes that afternoon. They would be so good together! There was no doubt in his mind.

Red Bear heard the lookout for the village announce the arrival of their friends from Rock Creek, and he left the teepee to go with Running Buck to greet them. Melissa stepped to the entrance of the teepee and watched from the flap. She wanted to run out and greet them as well, but knew she couldn’t. She watched as they all rode into the village together. Teaspoon was dressed in his Sunday go to meeting suit. Then Rachel, Noah, Kid and Lou, Cody, Duell, Nora, Ethan, Sarah and lastly Jimmy. She was reminded of the dream that her grandmother had shown her, and she wished that her grandmother could be there with her for their ceremony. For a moment she thanked her for the part that she had played in making all this happen. for she knew had she not intervened, it may not have taken place.

Sarah wasn’t surprised by how good looking Red Bear was. He greeted them all warmly though she could tell that he was a little apprehensive about them knowing where his village was. She presented him with the gifts that she had brought for he and his family, and he seemed to be very pleased with them. He gestured for one of the braves to take them to the area where the ceremony would be held, and he went to tell the elder that they were ready to begin.

The same musical flute greeted Melissa’s ears, and she smiled as she remembered Buck playing the same love song for her. Drums were added to the sweet sounds and Red Bear entered the teepee.

“It is time Gray Eyes.” He reached out his hand for her and she clasped it smiling.

Sarah was seated beside Jimmy around the fire pit. She caught a glimpse of Melissa as she stepped from the teepee at the right. Red Bear escorted her towards the assembled guests and villagers.

She was dressed in a white doe skin dress which was decorated with white beads. Her hair was left down with flowers entwined throughout the long tresses. The smile on her face told everyone present how happy she was.

Buck was dressed in buckskin pants and a fringed shirt. He looked much the Indian with his hair tied back, a feather attached to the right side of it. He watched Melissa walking towards him on his brother’s arm, and he knew that there was no one else in the world that could be as beautiful as she was!

Red Bear neared the fire pit, stopping in front of Buck. Reaching for his hand, he placed Melissa’s hand in his. “Running Buck, I gift you with the most precious gift of all, Gray Eyes. Never dishonor her in any way. Never trample on her heart. She is the most precious gift of all Father Sun and Mother Earth’s creations. Be good to her. She owns a very special part of you, the heart. See that she never has a reason to throw it away!”

With those words, he turned towards Teaspoon and the elder of the village. Teaspoon was the first as he read from the good book, speaking of love, cherishing, honoring one another. Both Buck and Melissa listened carefully to what he had to say, addressing one another with the vows that he presented to them. There were no doubts between them. This was right. When they had finished, Teaspoon announced them man and wife and gave Buck permission to kiss his bride.

From there, the ceremony changed. The elder of the village addressed both Running Buck and Gray Eyes. He told them in the Kiowa language that they were to honor, trust, and love one another. Gray Eyes was to obey Running Buck in all things. He was the decision maker of the two, and she was to never doubt his words. Running Buck was to provide for Gray Eyes until the time that he was called to walk the spirit path. Keep her in his heart at all times, and never shame her with his actions.

Red Bear stepped forward with a beautiful white robe, wrapping it around Buck’s shoulders. Buck then stepped closer to Melissa and drew her inside of its warmth with him. This was a symbol that they would keep each other safe and warm through the coming years of their marriage, never to turn their backs on one another. The villagers then came forward with gifts for the newlywed couple…food, blankets, cooking utensils, anything that they thought they might need. Buck and Melissa thanked them all individually, and then turned once more to Red Bear. He leaned near and kissed Melissa’s cheek, then hugged Buck. “My brother Running Buck is now two! I once again welcome Gray Eyes into my family, always to be welcomed as well as their children in the future. They have my blessing for a happy, long marriage.” The elder circled them several times chanting once again in Kiowa. As he circled them, he held a bowl with a mixture of plants burning, blowing the smoke all around them. This part of the ceremony was done to ward off any evil that may try to enter their lives. Once this was completed, the elder bowed, and Buck and Melissa kissed one another again. Their lives were now intertwined for all eternity.

Red Bear motioned for Sarah and Jimmy to step forward. “Running Buck and Gray Eyes have good friends who wish to have their white man’s marriage vows blessed by the elder of our village. With this ceremony, I take them into my family as well. They will never be turned away from our village.” He stepped close and kissed Sarah on the forehead and reached to clasp Jimmy’s hand in friendship. Jimmy shook it firmly. He was pleased to become a part of this family.

The elder started the same ceremony as he had just finished with Buck and Melissa. Sarah listened carefully to the words that he spoke. Though they were in Kiowa, she knew that he was telling her simply that she and Jimmy were to love, honor and cherish one another until eternity. She could feel the spirits as they drew close to them all. Red Bear placed the robe around their shoulders, and the villagers once more came forward with gifts. Sarah knew that it would be impolite to refuse them, and she and Jimmy thanked them all as Buck and Melissa had done. After the elder had circled them with the burning incense, Buck and Melissa came forward and stood with Jimmy and Sarah, the four of them clasping hands, forming a circle, and listening as the elder said a very special prayer.

The sun had gone down in the west and the stars were beginning to twinkle brightly around them. The flute and drums could once again be heard lowly behind them as the elder continued on with his prayer. Melissa had felt a very special presence, and she opened her eyes to see her grandmother standing a few yards from her. She squeezed Buck’s hand, and he opened his eyes and looked her way. But before he could question her with his eyes, he felt her presence as well. A beautiful smile covered grandmother’s face and she glanced towards Sarah and Jimmy. Sarah felt her and opened her eyes. She wasn’t surprised to see her standing there. Grandmother Running Doe stepped forward into their circle, and that was when Jimmy saw her. He jumped slightly, still a little unsettled at her appearing so suddenly, but he felt a calmness come over him, and he smiled at her. As the four watched her, they heard her voice one last time.

“My part is finished here on Mother Earth. Know that the four will always be a special number. Together there isn’t anything that cannot be conquered. Love is the key. Know that the feelings that you hold dear will linger long into the spirit world. Know that I will always be near to protect, though you will not see me again until you walk the spirit path with me. Running Buck, love my granddaughter with all your heart. She is very special. Hard headed one, love her friend Sarah, for she is the adopted granddaughter of Running Doe. Happiness is in store for the four. Happiness and much goodness. Love you always.”

With that she hugged each one, a hug that they each felt. Then she began to fade. Tears fell from Melissa’s eyes as she told her grandmother farewell. Sarah, Jimmy, and Buck also felt the emptiness as she vanished from sight, knowing that without her, they might not be together.

Melissa reached up to wipe the tears from her eyes, and she saw to the far right another spirit. She realized that it was her father. His form wasn’t as strong as grandmother’s had been. “Daddy….” Sarah heard her and looked in the same direction. She recognized Melissa’s father. Standing beside him was her father. Sarah drew in a startled breath, and Jimmy quickly looked her way.

“Sarah?”

“Our father’s.” She nodded towards them.

They were smiling, and nodding that this was the way things were supposed to be. Melissa and Sarah could feel them as they stepped into the circle. Both Jimmy and Buck tensed as the entered the circle with them.

“Love our daughters. For they have conquered their fears and are living out our dream. We entrust them to you. The dream has brought you all together. Honor it, forever.” The two men were focused on Buck and Jimmy. In unison they nodded, letting them know that they would forever love and protect their daughters.

At that they vanished. Sarah and Melissa couldn’t believe what had just happened. They had been used to seeing grandmother, but had never expected to see their fathers’ spirits. Deep inside, they knew that they were pleased with the decisions that they had made and with the men that they had chosen to spend the rest of their lives with.

The elder had finished his prayer, and as he looked upon the four standing in the circle, their hands joined, he drew in a sharp breath. There were feathers falling from the sky, hundreds of them it seemed, landing in their hair, and at their feet. The elder knew then, that these unions had been truly blessed by someone from the spirit world...eagle feathers were sacred!

Buck, Melissa, Jimmy, and Sarah watched the feathers swirling around them from the sky. Grandmother Running Doe would be forever dear to them all.

Melissa wiped the tears from her face as she leaned near to kiss Buck. She loved him so much. Sarah was pulling Jimmy near, kissing him also. She’d never thought she’d have this man. She knew that their union was blessed in both worlds now.

The four of them pulled each other near in a group hug. This was the beginning of their lives together…the beginning of a very happy loving future. One made up of two very different worlds, but one they knew held the blessing of both very special cultures! The four of them would always be together, even when the time came for them to walk the spirit path. It was destiny. A very special destiny!

THE END
